Job Description

We have an opening for an Additive Manufacturing Technologist/Senior Additive Manufacturing Technologist. You will support the development, optimization, and manufacturing of parts using advanced additive manufacturing processes in both metals and polymers. You will perform operations related to additive manufacturing including powder handling, machine setup, modeling, machine programming, maintenance assignments, post-processing, and safety and security responsibilities. This position is in the Manufacturing Engineering Section in Materials Engineering Division (MED), supporting the Additive Manufacturing Work Center.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

This position will be filled at eitherlevel based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role, you will

  • Program and operate Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM), and Stereolithography (SLA) systems.
  • Perform all functions related to machine turnaround, preparation, and part post-processing.
  • Utilize Manufacturing Executing System (MES) for data entry, part tracking, and time logging.
  • Manage classified documents, parts, and systems.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe shop environment.
  • Perform daily checks on machines and assist in maintenance, testing, and upgrades to equipment.
  • Update management on process workflow, customer relations, job progress, and facility or equipment issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities at the 533.3 Level

  • Work independently and manage working on multiple projects and prioritize your time to meet delivery deadlines.
  • Evaluate print outcomes, troubleshoot process issues, and implement corrective actions.
  • Optimize support and scan strategies to facilitate manufacturing complex geometries.
  • Operate advanced on-machine monitoring tools to identify process instabilities.
  • Assist in developing standard operating procedures and process improvements.
  • Document and present findings to peer group and management.
  • Identify, analyze and provide solutions or alternate approaches to manufacturing problems using individual judgement and creativity.

Qualifications
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • AA/AS degree in Engineering Technology and/or degree/certifications in mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing technology, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs, crouch, and lift up to 50 lbs regularly but occasionally up to 80 lbs.
  • Ability to attain and maintain respirator approval through Health Services.
  • Effective written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills and abilities working effectively with all levels of management, technical, engineering, and scientific staff.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Mechanical aptitude with experience in manufacturing, design, assembly, and/or fabrication.
  • Ability to learn Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software.
  • Ability to read technical drawings and interpret engineering specifications.

Additional qualifications at the 533.3 level

  • Advanced knowledge of ASME Y14.5M drafting standards (read and interpret blueprints) to produce parts and assemblies.
  • Advanced knowledge of a wide variety of materials and manufacturing processes including some difficult to machine and exotic materials.
  • Advanced level knowledge of advanced fabrication processes, such as programming, machining, planning, and estimating.

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience in CAD/CAM programming (Solidworks, Autodesk Netfabb, Prusa Slicer, Stratasys Insight, Materialize Magics, Fusion 360, Mastercam).
  • Experience in L-PBF, SLS, FDM, and/or SLA additive manufacturing.
  • Experience in machining using lathes, mills, wire-edm, band saws, welding, casting, forming, etc.
  • Understanding of additive manufacturing workflows, materials, and post-processing methods.
  • Experience handling classified documents, parts, and removable electronic media.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001, AS9100, or similar quality standards.
  • Knowledge of Design of Experiments (DoE), metrology tools, and statistical process control.
  • Familiarity with LLNLES&H and Security policies and procedures.

Pay Range:

$43.55 - $63.97 Hourly

$43.55 - $53.36 Hourly for the 533.2 level

$52.23 - $63.97 Hourly for the 533.3 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage. An employee's position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.
