This position is responsible for the research, design, development, and validation of mechanical enclosures and electromechanical systems - from initial concept through final production release and ongoing sustaining engineering support.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Design and Development: Conceptualize, design and develop mechanical systems, enclosures, and packaging for electromechanical products using standard machine components, gears, castings, fabrications, and machined parts.
- Validation and Testing: Lead 100% prototype validation testing on new mechanical designs to verify structural integrity, thermal performance and overall functionality.
- Compliance and Quality: Ensure all product designs comply with internal engineering standards, industry regulations, functional specifications and customer requirements.
- Design Reviews and Optimization: Initiate and participate in cross functional design reviews; Identify and execute Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VA/VE) projects to optimize cost, quality, and manufacturability for existing product lines.
- Troubleshooting and Support: lead root cause analysis and troubleshooting for complex mechanical issues, product performance, defects, and field/production line failures.
- Cross Functional Communication: Collaborate directly with customers to clarify technical requirements. Coordinate with suppliers and production teams to ensure smooth handoffs for final manufacturing release.
- This position is also responsible for ISO procedure compliance, initiating action to prevent problems, documenting quality problems, contributing to problem solutions, verifying implementation of solutions, controlling further processing when a problem is identified, protecting the environment including preventing pollution, and analyzing or identifying areas for correction or improvement.
- Other essential duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications/Requirements: Required:
- Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university.
- 3+ years relevant hands-on experience in mechanical design and product development, ideally focused on electro-mechanical systems, electronic packaging, enclosed machinery, or combination of education and experience.
Preferred:
- Experience with electromechanical integration specific to 12V/24V automotive systems, harnesses and interconnects.
- Core Mechanical Design: Strong foundational knowledge of machine design principles, including material selection, tolerance, stack up analysis, structural integrity, and manufacturing processes (sheet metal fabrication, CNC machining, die casting, injection molding).
- 3D CAD and Modeling: Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD software, preferably SolidWorks, and drafting standards (GD&T per ASME Y14.5).
- Prototyping and Validation: Hands-on experience building, testing and validating physical prototypes including setup of test rigs, mechanical failure analysis, and environmental/thermal testing.
- Design for Excellence (DFX): Practical experience with Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VA/VE) methodologies.
- Compliance and Standards: Familiarity with industry standards, for example, NEMA IP ratings for enclosures, Ingress Protection (IP) standards, UL, ISO or CE compliance relevant to electronic packaging.
- Working Knowledge of Design for Manufacturing, Design for Test and Design for Reliability engineering practices.
