Provide support to laboratory metallurgical and material testing and related activities.

Metallurgical Laboratory Technician

Position Summary

The Metallurgical Laboratory Technician provides support for laboratory metallurgical and material testing activities. This role is responsible for preparing metal samples, conducting material evaluations, operating laboratory equipment, and maintaining testing instruments. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, hands-on, and comfortable working with precision measurement and testing equipment.

Key Responsibilities

Metallographic Sample Preparation

* Prepare metal samples using band saws, cut-off saws, and metallographic saws.

* Perform mounting, grinding, and polishing of samples for testing and evaluation.

* Ensure samples meet quality standards for laboratory analysis.

Material Testing and Evaluation

* Conduct hardness testing and tensile testing.

* Perform microstructural evaluations using microscopes.

* Measure surface roughness and perform salt spray corrosion testing.

* Conduct pH measurements and utilize precision balances for material analysis.

* Operate laboratory equipment, including microscopes and spectrometers.

Equipment Maintenance

* Perform routine cleaning and preventive maintenance on laboratory equipment.

* Assist with troubleshooting and repairs as needed.

* Maintain a safe, organized, and efficient laboratory environment.

Qualifications

* Associate degree or two-year technical degree preferred.

* Previous laboratory experience preferred.

* Experience with cutting, sample preparation, or material testing is highly desirable.

* Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established testing procedures.

* Ability to accurately examine and evaluate small materials using a microscope.

* Comfortable working in a hands-on laboratory environment and using hand tools.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have:

* Laboratory testing or materials testing experience.

* Experience cutting and preparing metal samples.

* The ability to identify and evaluate microstructural characteristics using a microscope.

* Strong mechanical aptitude and experience using hand tools.

* A high level of accuracy, attention to detail, and commitment to quality.

Physical Requirements

* Active, hands-on role requiring standing, walking, lifting, and operating laboratory equipment.

* Ability to safely handle test specimens, equipment, and hand tools.
