Within the Division of Student Affairs, the area of Residence Life oversees residential spaces that house approximately 626 residential college and 200+ high school students. The Department of Residence Life cooperates with the campus at large to create a community environment conducive to personal and professional growth unique to high school students in a residential arts conservatory educational setting.

Residence Life staff working with UNCSA's residential high school population serve as "live-in" peer educators, administrators, resource persons, and counselors. These staff advocate for the enrichment of high school student artists' experiences by promoting self-awareness, providing healthy social opportunities, identifying resources for success, and presenting educational programs focused on developing lifelong skills.

These staff strive to foster an environment that gives commuter and residential high school students an opportunity to be innovative, creative, and reach their fullest potential and are committed to proactively and efficiently addressing students' residential and social needs by creating a safe and healthy living and learning environment.
Primary Description of Work
The Director of High School Life is a full-time, 12-month position , live on position, reporting to the Assistant Dean of High School Life and is responsible for assisting in the leadership of the high school life component of a comprehensive high school housing and residential education program. The operation includes two high school residence halls: Moore and Sanford Hall.

This position assists in supervising, guiding and supporting seven professional live-in staff (Community Coordinators), Activities Coordinator, Administrative Support Specialist, and part-time staff in their duties in pursuit of institutional, divisional and departmental missions.
Work Schedule and hours
Sunday-Saturday, flexible evenings and weekends with some hours during the day, and on-call responsibilities on rotational basis

Mostly traditional hours during 8-5 work days for staff meetings, office hours, required dept. & division meetings. Nontraditional hours on nights, weekends, all-play days, or on-call duty responsibilities as needed.
Description of Responsibilities and Duties
Specific duties include: advancing high school wellness and student learning through intentional residence education and extracurricular programs and activities; supporting live-in staff in administering residence hall programming; assisting with assessment activities; supporting/advancing the case management model related to identifying and supporting at-risk high school students; supporting all institutional retention-related efforts; implementing efficiency expectations established by key stakeholders; managing and participating in departmental 24-hour/365-day professional staff/paraprofessional staff on-call process.

Secondary responsibilities include providing general support for the College Residence Life area for summer and break duty.

This position requires regular collaboration with the High School, Academics, Arts and other campus partners with the goal of aligning residence life programs directly with the university's academic mission.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and three (3) - five (5) years of housing experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Eight or more years experience working with HS age population and boarding school residence life experience. Particularly in working and communication with parents/guardians on issues related to high school student populations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
ADMINISTRATION

  • Coordinate administrative tasks while providing quality communication and customer service to the UNCSA high school community.
  • Oversee the general administration functions of the Connector Desk, Community Coordinator Office, and use of REACH software for students and their families.
  • Coordinate communication initiatives from High School Life to parents/families of high school population.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for Residential high school students and families.
  • Work individually and on a team to create a fun, nurturing, and safe environment for students and colleagues.
  • Review, create and implement new policies and procedures that will improve the efficiency and effectiveness of office operations that support Residence Life policies in the high school area.
  • Help promote the goals of Residence Life and partnering areas by attending and participating in weekly team meetings, internal training and professional development opportunities.
  • Provide general support for the Residence Life team in the college area.
  • Merge on-call structure with Residence Life team in the college area for break duty (Winter/Summer).
  • Ensure staff are consistently conducting curfew checks for 200+ residential students and securing the buildings via the alarm system.
  • Assist the Assistant Dean of High School Life in the on-going training, support for live-in/live-on staff.
  • Provide weekly and/or bi-weekly 1:1's with Community Coordinators.
  • Review and approved Office Expense forms for Community Coordinator programs and ensure policy for purchases are followed.
  • Submits Office Expense Forms for planned programs to supervisor and purchases approved items for all planned programs and events.
  • Provides support and leadership to areas of high school life including academics, clubs and organizations, community development, event planning, peer leadership program, social justice initiatives, or other various programs and activities.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with coworkers and campus colleagues.
  • Identify, document, draft, and provide input to proposed changes to work standards, processes, and procedures for discussion with supervisors.
  • Serve as a member of the essential/mandatory staff for the university.
  • Be a visible resource on campus providing advocacy to the high school student population.
  • Maintain high levels of communication with team members, parents/guardians, students including; in-person (interpersonal), email, hard copies of interdepartmental or campus communications and phone calls.
  • Serve in a regular Director on-call schedule for the Division of Student Affairs.


RESIDENCE HALL MANAGEMENT

  • Maintain a high level of student contact, availability, and visibility by spending time in the high school area life area.
  • Oversee health and safety inspections for Sanford and Moore Halls. Work with Community Coordinators to ensure health and safety inspections are completed, review reports and ensure concerns are reported in a timely manner.
  • Collaborate with Community Coordinator's in the oversight of the recruitment, selection, training, and continued development of Peer Leaders throughout the year.
  • Assist, as needed, with opening and closing of the College residential area.
  • Collaboratively plan with Community Coordinators that floor meetings (as needed) for the purpose of input, support, accountability, and dissemination of information are conducted.
  • Provides staff leadership, coordination and general supervision of the residence hall programs in the high school area.
  • Advise and counsel students, individually and in groups, about personal, artistic and academic concerns.
  • Maintain a high level of student contact, availability and visibility by spending time in the high school areas.
  • Participate in hall opening and closings to include break closings.

PROGRAMMING / COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

  • Organize and facilitate programs that are educational in nature and will assist with the overall growth and development of high school students.
  • Supervise high school students in a supportive and nurturing environment.
  • Plan and facilitate monthly High School Assemblies for the purpose of disseminating information, empowering student leaders of clubs and organizations to share upcoming information pertinent to students.

  • Provide direct supervision and support for students at High School Residence Life programs and events.
  • Serve as a resource for residence hall programming and monthly community meetings and active and passive programming for the high school community.
  • Participate in planned activities and support initiatives planned by the Peer Leaders, Community Coordinators, College residence life staff and other external departments.
  • Collaborate with the College Residential Life area on programming/initiatives.
  • Encourage peer involvement among students in promoting compliance with school policies and creation of a safe and healthy community.
  • Collaborate with Community Coordinators to assist with organizing and coordinating the following: Peer leader program, managing student clubs and organizations, community service initiatives for the department, and planning/implementing high school activities.
  • Lead in the planning and execution of passive and active community service initiatives for the high school community.
  • Monitor and promote a safe living environment for all students and calmly respond and make decisions in emergency situations.

CONDUCT MANAGEMENT

  • Maintain a proactive and educational approach to discipline while enforcing policies through teachable moments that lead to community success.
  • Assist staff in enforcing all high school residence hall and school policies and regulations.
  • Assist the Director of High School Life by maintaining disciplinary records and making judicial referrals consistent with the policies and procedures of UNCSA and Residence Life and Housing Programs.
  • Assist with low-level conduct cases, investigations and follow-up as necessary.
  • Work collaboratively with Campus Police during their investigations, if needed.
  • Provide students with educational conversations and feedback when opportunities arise that will assist them in their overall growth and development.
  • Hear select College Residential Life conduct cases as assigned
