Duration- 3+ months

Schedule: Varied Monday-Friday, 6:30 AM-5:30 PM; alternating Saturdays, 7:00 AM-1:00 PM.

Summary

The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations.


Position Responsibilities

  • Perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data and decontamination, and update patient information.
  • Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.
  • Clearly and courteously explain the venipuncture (blood drawing) and other specimen collection processes, such as urine or fecal collection, as required.
  • Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and/or butterfly needles.
  • Fully understand physicians' orders.
  • Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.
  • Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.
  • Check all test requisitions or computer labels against the script to ensure 100% accuracy.
  • Package specimens for transport.
  • Store specimen samples according to required temperature and place samples in the appropriate collection container/tube.
  • Accurately label specimens and follow specific protocols necessary for transport to maintain specimen integrity.
  • Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.
  • Attend annual department trainings.
  • Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid Phlebotomy certification for the state where employed, as required in some states.
  • Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • 2-4 years of experience.
