If you're a Heavy Duty Fleet Diesel Mechanic who would rather work on heavy-duty trucks than passenger vehicles, this is the opportunity for you. We're looking for someone who knows their way around big trucks and can diagnose and repair diesel engines, transmissions, air brakes, suspension, electrical systems, hydraulics, and other heavy-duty components. WHAT YOU'LL WORK ON This isn't a light-duty automotive mechanic position. You'll work on a fleet of heavy-duty commercial refuse trucks and support equipment, including diesel, gasoline, and CNG-powered vehicles. You'll diagnose, maintain, and repair:
- Heavy-duty diesel engines
- Transmissions and drivetrains
- Air brake systems
- Suspension and steering systems
- Hydraulic systems
- Electrical and electronic systems
- Body and chassis components
- Preventive maintenance items
- Safety-related equipment
- Welding and light fabrication, as needed
You'll also use computer-based diagnostic equipment to troubleshoot problems, identify failure modes, and complete repairs according to manufacturer specifications.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Diagnose and repair mechanical problems on heavy-duty commercial trucks.
- Troubleshoot diesel engines, transmissions, brakes, suspension, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
- Complete repairs identified through Driver Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIRs).
- Perform preventive maintenance and safety inspections.
- Use electronic and computer diagnostic equipment to identify problems.
- Read and follow manufacturer service manuals and repair specifications.
- Identify potential mechanical issues before they result in breakdowns or additional downtime.
- Complete repair orders and document work accurately.
- Communicate with drivers and management regarding truck condition and repair status.
- Assist and provide technical guidance to Assistant Technicians and Shop Helpers.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop.
- Follow Waste Pro and OSHA safety requirements.
WE'RE LOOKING FOR A REAL HEAVY-DUTY MECHANIC You may be a great fit if you have experience working on garbage trucks, roll-off trucks, dump trucks, concrete/mixer trucks, tractor-trailers, construction equipment, heavy-duty vocational trucks, or other large commercial diesel equipment. We're looking for experience with:
- Heavy-duty diesel truck maintenance and repair
- Air brake diagnosis and repair
- Suspension and steering systems
- Hydraulic systems
- Electrical troubleshooting and repair
- Engine and transmission diagnostics
- Computer-based diagnostic equipment
- Preventive maintenance and DOT/safety inspections
- Reading and interpreting manufacturer service manuals
- Estimating labor time, parts, and materials needed for repairs
- Troubleshooting difficult mechanical problems
CDL Class B is preferred, or you must be able to obtain one within 12 months of employment.

PHYSICAL & WORK REQUIREMENTS This is a hands-on heavy-duty mechanic position in a working fleet maintenance environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the position. The job may require:
- Working around large commercial trucks, heavy equipment, vehicle traffic, noise, dirt, grease, chemicals, and residential waste.
- Working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Walking, bending, crouching, twisting, reaching, pushing, and pulling throughout the workday.
- Entering and exiting commercial vehicle cabs throughout the workday.
- Lifting and handling tools, parts, and equipment weighing approximately 50-75 pounds.
- Properly using all required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Performing occasional road calls in varying weather conditions.
