Professional and Global Education, formerly UCR Extension, is the continuing and professional education division of the University of California, Riverside offering programs and certificates to domestic and international students. Professional and Global Education values excellence and has educated international students for over forty years.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Position Title: English-Spanish Interpretation Instructor

Salary Range: Compensation is tiered and scaled by course enrollment, with a base rate of $500 for a single student and up to $2,700 for a maximum of 25 students. An additional $100 per unit course development fee is payable the first time an instructor teaches in each modality.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

UCR Professional and Global Education (UCR PGE) is seeking experienced professionals to join our instructional team as a part-time instructor for adult learners. Successful candidates of this continuous recruitment will be eligible to teach courses as they are scheduled during the year in our English-Spanish Interpretation program. This Professional Certificate resides in the Professional Programs Department, and prepares individuals to enter into the professional field of interpreting and formal translation.

Courses are 10 weeks in length with 12 to 14 three-hour sessions, and are offered synchronously online.

• Qualifying Admission Exam for the Professional Certificate in English-Spanish Interpretation
• Introduction to Legal Interpretation and Sight Translation
• Simultaneous Interpretation for Interpreters and Translators
• Sight Translation for Interpreters
• Medical Interpretation
• Medical Terminology
• Ethics and Legal Court Proceedings
• Court Interpretation- Exam Preparation
• Community Interpretation
• Community Interpretation and Translation in Education

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Provide instruction in accordance with the established instructional agreement, curriculum outlines, and class schedule provided by UCR PGE.
• Communicate teaching objectives and specific learning outcomes to students, and clearly outline the grading policies of the course.
• Provide students with prompt and substantive feedback on their assignments.
• Work in conjunction with collaborative partners and subject matter experts to ensure that course information is current.
• Participate in scheduled orientations, meetings, and mandatory training programs by UCR's established deadlines.
• Maintain timely and accurate academic records within the learning management system, and submit timely and accurate documentation, as well as student grades, as outlined in the instructional agreement.
• Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct.

REQUIREMENTS

Minimum Requirements:

• Complete bilingual and biliterate fluency in English and Spanish, with superior verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills in both languages.
• Advanced degree in Spanish Language or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Minimum of 5 years of professional English/Spanish interpretation experience across medical, community, educational, legal, and/or courtroom settings.
• Active credential as a California Certified Court Interpreter is required for instructors teaching courtroom interpretation courses.
• Active credential from the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CHI) or National Board of Certification for Medical Interpreters (NBCMI) or equivalent is required for instructors teaching medical interpretation courses.
• Ability to provide instruction online via Canvas and Zoom.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Authorization to work in the United States.

This part-time position has no benefits, but participates in the University of California Defined Contribution Plan.
