Departmental Overview

The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics consists of approximately 300 staff members and coaches; we sponsor 30 varsity sports programs. These 30 programs include more than 850 student-athletes who participate in our sports programs annually within the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA).

Position Summary

The Gymnastics Chief of Staff develops, promotes, and supports the operational and strategic aspects of intercollegiate student athlete programs, including planning, scheduling, budget administration, and travel. This position aids and facilitates the operation of the women's gymnastics program and serves as an advisor to the Head Coach and the program. This position supports the academics and student services aspects of the program, serving as the liaison to the Athletic Study Center and Compliance offices.

The Gymnastics Chief of Staff plays a role in recruiting, assisting with all on-campus recruiting trips, and coordinating the travel plans of the Head Coach for all recruiting activities. Overall, this position helps support the overall operations of the program and ensures it promotes the holistic well-being and development of the student-athletes. This position creates competition schedules, recruiting strategies, manages scholarship budgets and allocations, and serves as the conduit between the gymnastics team and all the support units assigned to the program.

This position works closely on all strategy around the program - fundraising, marketing, creative, broadcast, community engagement. The Gymnastics Chief of Staff serves as the main point of contact for all communication to the program and from the program and serves as the internal face of the program. This position ensures each student athlete is aware of time commitments - academic, community, training and others, while serving as a first-line resource to students. Additionally, this position engages in statistical analysis, development of analytic reports, and assists with the daily operation of the team to ensure cohesiveness between the gymnastics program, the support units and the Athletics Department.

Responsibilities

Practice and Game Planning - 10%

  • Works with the coaching staff during the off-season and regular season to plan, create, and implement practice and game plans for the Women's Gymnastics team, including scouting opponents based on game footage.

Program Administration and Student Services - 30%

  • Independently plans, organizes, administers and implements mid-size, complex athletics program(s) such as Academics, Compliance, Budget Management and Reporting Marketing/Fan Experience, Equipment, Donor Engagement.
  • Serve as a "go-to" and liaison between the coaches and campus/department staff as it relates to the holistic development of the student-athletes, particularly working with the Compliance and Athletic Study Center offices.
  • Coordinates with respective departments to assist student-athletes with recruitment process, admissions, financial aid, summer bridge/Golden Bear Orientation programs, housing, etc.

Recruitment and Logistics - 10%

  • Assist with the coordination and logistics of all on-Campus recruiting activities (official and un-official visits).
  • Will manage all travel arrangements (flights, hotels of Head Coach related to recruiting activities, including in-home visits, scouting/recruitment trips, etc.

Competition Scheduling - 5%

  • Will coordinate the non-conference game scheduling each year.
  • Will discuss possible opponents with Head Coach, reach out to various teams to gauge interest, work with department staff to schedule games, etc.
  • Coordinate the collection and management of opponent and judging contracts, and arrange travel accommodations for judges throughout the competition season.

Community and Donor Engagement - 15%

  • Establish and maintain effective interactions with the university community, alumni, donors, media and the public.
  • Support and coordinate Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) opportunities for the team, ensuring alignment with applicable policies and program requirements.
  • May be asked to engage in development activities, including but not limited to fundraisers, donor meetings, etc.

Program Advising and Student Well-being - 20%

  • Serve as an advisor to the Head Coach and ensure the program is running optimally.
  • Help foster an environment that promotes the well-being and personal development of the student-athletes.

General Support and Professional Development - 10%

  • Other duties as assigned by Head Coach, including professional development.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience working with a Division 1 Women's Gymnastics program, breaking down and analyzing film.
  • Thorough knowledge of program activity and best practices.
  • Problem-solving skills; multi-task, work with frequent interruptions, and effective listener.
  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills in the English language.
  • Proficiency in the use of basic computer applications relevant to job duties.
  • Solid organizational skills and ability to accomplish multiple tasks within demanding timeframes.
  • Ability to use discretion and maintain all confidentiality.
  • Ability to use sound judgment in responding to issues and concerns.
  • Must maintain current knowledge of applicable rules and standards of the ACC, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), as well as other associations and agencies to which the Berkeley campus of the University of California adheres, and/or the ability to learn, and at all times avoid any and all violations of these rules and standards.

Education / Training

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $90,000 - $110,000.

  • This is an exempt, monthly-paid position.
  • This is a 1-year, full-time (40 hours/week) contract position eligible for UC benefits.
