UNC Charlotte is a Carnegie R1 research university located in one of the nation's fastest growing major metropolitan areas. The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at UNC Charlotte serves approximately 600 undergraduate students and 75 graduate students, offering B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering, as well as a B.S. degree in Environmental Engineering. The CEE Department currently comprises 25 full-time faculty members who are actively engaged in research and teaching across geotechnical, geoenvironmental, environmental, water resources, structural, and transportation engineering. Teaching, Advising, Curriculum and Instructional Development - Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to teaching may include but are not limited to: subject matter competence, course design, course presentation, advising and consultation, directing student research, curriculum and instructional development, and grading student work.
Scholarly Research, Creative, and Other Professional Activities - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to participate in expanding the knowledge base of their academic field by conducting research or engaging in other creative activities as appropriate to the faculty member's discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to research may include but are not limited to: research/creative activity that generates new knowledge and/or synthesizes and/or integrates existing knowledge, publication, an on-going agenda for research, scholarly, and creative activity, and are expected to seek extramural support for their work.
Service to University, the Public, and the Profession - All tenured and tenure-track faculty are expected to engage in a program of service appropriate to their discipline. Faculty responsibilities and essential functions with respect to service may include but are not limited to: service to the administration and governance of the University, public service, and service to the profession.

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering ( CEE) at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte ( UNC Charlotte) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Geotechnical Engineering. The search is open to candidates from all areas of geotechnical engineering, with particular interest in fundamental and experimental soil mechanics; foundation engineering and soil-structure interaction; geosynthetics and sustainable geomaterials; underground construction and rock mechanics; geoenvironmental engineering; transportation and aviation geotechnics; defense/energy geotechnics and infrastructure; and infrastructure resilience. Candidates who integrate advanced computational geomechanics, large-scale or field experimentation, artificial intelligence and data science, or advanced sensing and monitoring into these or related areas are particularly encouraged to apply. Outstanding candidates across all other emerging sub-disciplines of geotechnical engineering are also invited to submit applications. The anticipated start date for the position is August 11, 2027.

The successful candidate will strengthen and expand the Department's existing geotechnical expertise, foster interdisciplinary research collaborations, and contribute to the growth of its research and graduate programs. The candidate will be expected to leverage relevant research facilities and engage with College research centers and institutes, as appropriate to their research program, including the Energy Production and Infrastructure Center ( EPIC), the National Defense & Intelligence Innovation Institute (NDI3) and the Charlotte Aviation Innovation and Research ( AIR) Institute. The Department provides access to state-of-the-art teaching, laboratory, and research facilities, including the EPIC-High-Bay Structural Laboratory, which offers extensive capabilities for large-scale structural and geotechnical testing, advanced sensing, and experimental research supported by dedicated technical staff.
