Position SummaryThe Department of Biology at the University of New Mexico invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Comparative Animal Physiology to begin in August 2027. Applicants must have a PhD in biology or a related field by date of application. For best consideration, all application materials must be received by November 6, 2026. Applications must demonstrate 1) the ability to develop a vigorous externally funded research program in comparative animal physiology including a lab and/or field component, 2) a promising publication record, 3) the ability to achieve excellence in teaching and mentoring, and 4) an interest in collaborating with faculty and students across a diverse array of fields. The new faculty member will be expected to teach a core undergraduate class in animal physiology, upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses related to their research interests, as well as to mentor masters and doctoral students. The Department of Biology at UNM is a broad unified department representing all fields of biology. It includes the Museum of Southwestern Biology (MSB), Center for Evolutionary and Theoretical Immunology (CETI), the Sevilleta Long-Term Ecological Research Program (SEV-LTER), Center for Stable Isotopes (CSI), and an Animal Research Facility that supports experimental work on terrestrial and aquatic model organisms. The department has 35 tenure and tenure-track faculty as well as 11 lecturers, supports an active graduate program with >100 students, and has one of the most dynamic and successful research programs on campus. Qualifications Minimum and Preferred Criteria: Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in Biology or closely related field by start date of application. At least one year of relevant postdoctoral experience by date of appointment. Preferred Qualifications: Evidence of strength or potential for excellence in undergraduate and/or graduate teaching, including the ability to teach undergraduate animal physiology Demonstrated potential for scholarship and impactful contributions to peer-reviewed literature Commitment to mentoring undergraduate and graduate students Potential to collaborate with faculty and students across diverse fields Evidence of potential to develop a vigorous, externally funded, research program A demonstrated commitment to cultivate an understanding of the rich and varied cultures of New Mexico and to the success of the university's mission to serve local and global communities.
