2027 Process Metallurgist Internship - ATI Specialty Materials

Location: Monroe, NC - Billet Conditioning

Program Duration: 10 Weeks | Summer 2027

Target Students: Rising Sophomores, Juniors & Seniors - Materials Science & Engineering

At ATI, we engineer specialty materials that power the next generation of aircraft, spacecraft, surgical implants, and energy systems. As a Process Metallurgist Intern, you'll gain hands-on experience applying fundamental metallurgy to real-world manufacturing processes. You'll work alongside experienced metallurgists and operations teams to analyze process data, evaluate microstructural changes, identify improvement opportunities, and support process optimization across Monroe's Press, Radial Forge, and Conditioning operations.

Depending on your project assignment, you may:

• Analyze titanium hot working processes by correlating changes such as reduced furnace soak times and modified reduction schedules with microstructural changes and their impact on product testing and RFT.
• Perform process audits of standardized tasks within the Monroe Press, Radial Forge, and Conditioning areas to evaluate operator execution, process compliance, and opportunities for improvement.
• Analyze Radial Forge output and process data to identify reduction schedules associated with excessive forging forces
• Apply metallurgical knowledge and data analysis to support process optimization and manufacturing improvements across nickel, titanium, and specialty steel alloy groups.
• Prepare and present project findings and recommendations to peers and leadership.

1. Hands-on experience applying metallurgy and materials science to real-world manufacturing processes.
2. Practical knowledge of titanium processing, hot working, forging, and billet conditioning.
3. Experience with statistical and process data analysis to identify trends and improvement opportunities.
4. Exposure to process auditing, standardized work, and manufacturing process improvement.
5. Experience solving technical problems in a manufacturing environment.
6. Opportunities to develop technical report-out and presentation skills with peers and executive personnel.
7. Experience working both independently and as part of a cross-functional team.
8. A stronger understanding of how materials science concepts translate into finished-product performance and manufacturing results.

• Currently pursuing an undergraduate degree in:

  • Metallurgical Engineering
  • Related Materials or Metallurgy discipline
  
  
  
  
• Completion of at least sophomore year of study required; rising juniors and seniors preferred.
• Understanding of basic metallurgy and materials science principles.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Interest in manufacturing, metalworking, and process improvement.
• Ability to analyze statistical/process data and identify trends.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a manufacturing
