The School of Social Ecology has marshaled its interdisciplinary expertise to focus on areas including global environmental degradation, poverty and other forms of inequality, prison overcrowding and gang violence in California, healthy child development, challenges faced by an aging population, health risks and community empowerment. These efforts have made the School of Social Ecology a national leader in applying basic theory and empirical research to a range of complex societal problems. SE-hive is a team of instructional designers who collaborate with Social Ecology faculty to design learning experiences that empower students to become transformative leaders capable of translating science into solutions to address society's challenges.


Your Role on the Team

As part of the Social Ecology instructional design team, the Instructional Designer 2 (ID 2) will support self-supported degree programs (SSDP), including our newest SSDP, launching Fall 2026, and state-supported undergraduate courses. The ID 2 will work collaboratively with the instructional design team to prepare and maintain courses, support faculty throughout course delivery, troubleshoot and support learning technologies, and contribute to team instructional design projects and initiatives.
The ID 2 will use instructional design, educational technology, and multimedia development skills to help maintain, develop, troubleshoot, and shape curricular materials into consistent and engaging learning experiences grounded in sound pedagogy and best practice. They will leverage technology with intention to craft learning experiences that are clear, easy to navigate, and foster active engagement and meaningful learning. A key part of this work includes conducting quality assurance reviews to ensure course materials and environments meet established standards prior to launch, including verifying ADA compliance, copyright adherence, and other institutional obligations.
The ID 2 will serve as a learning technologies resource for the team, staying current with emerging tools and trends in instructional design and educational technology. The ID 2 will provide day-to-day technical support to ensure the smooth operation of course environments and team workflows.
Additionally, the ID 2 will work on instructional design content and initiatives that are of moderate scope and complexity, demonstrating a high degree of collaboration and diplomacy as well as problem analysis and creative solutions, and solve complex content or delivery related issues in collaboration with technical teams. The incumbent will interact with senior internal and external personnel and exercise judgment within defined procedures and practices to determine appropriate actions.


What It Takes to be Successful

Required:

  • Working knowledge of functional area and understands how work within one course may impact work being done on other courses or in other areas.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills to conduct analysis and develop recommendations, demonstrating organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in analytical, verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, collaboration and negotiation skills.
  • Working knowledge of organization policies and procedures, including policies that impact online course development.
  • Working knowledge of instructional design principles and learning strategies, including needs analysis, backwards design, learning outcomes and assessment design, and instructional approaches including lecture, discussion, activities, projects, etc.
  • Working knowledge of the technical tools and platforms required to achieve the delivery of engaging and media-rich online learning content, and of trends in the use and effectiveness of educational technology and learning.
  • Working knowledge and skills with relevant business software systems.
  • Working knowledge of adult learning theories and education methodologies.
  • Working knowledge of e-learning strategies including but not limited to courses (e.g., processes and technologies, etc.).
  • Experience with Canvas LMS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
  • A minimum of 1 year of experienceAt least 1 year of relevant instructional design work experience

Preferred:

  • Proficiency in planning, resourcing and monitoring effective design life cycles of training and other learning and performance solutions to support the organization.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (OneDrive, Word, PPT, Excel), Google Workspace (Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets)
  • Experience with basic HTML coding
  • Experience using eLearning tools such as Articulate Storyline, Rise, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.

The expected pay range for this recruitment is $$33.04- $$37.00 (Hourly).
