Job Description
General Purpose of Job: The Department Manager of Central Sterile Processing is responsible for the strategic, operational, financial, quality, and personnel management of the Central Sterile Processing Department. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and compliant decontamination, preparation, sterilization, storage, and distribution of surgical and procedural instrumentation and equipment required to support patient care across the health system. The Manager collaborates with perioperative, procedural, clinical, and organizational leaders to maintain operational excellence, patient safety, and customer satisfaction. Leadership
- Serves as the operational leader for Central Sterile Processing services within assigned areas of responsibility and exercises sound decision-making within established authority.
- Promotes and supports shared decision-making by empowering team members through appropriate delegation of responsibility, authority, and accountability.
- Recruits, hires, develops, and retains qualified staff to support departmental and organizational goals.
- Establishes clear performance expectations and fosters a culture of accountability, engagement, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
- Ensures compliance with hospital policies, state and federal regulations, accreditation standards, infection prevention requirements, and professional practice standards related to sterile processing operations.
- Communicates and reinforces the organization's mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities, aligning departmental goals with organizational objectives.
- Leads change initiatives and operational improvements that enhance service delivery, quality, safety, and efficiency.
Care Delivery System / Operational Management
- Directs and oversees day-to-day department operations to ensure the safe, efficient, and timely decontamination, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of instruments and equipment.
- Maintains surgical and procedural readiness by ensuring the availability, integrity, and sterility of instruments, equipment, and supplies required to support patient care.
- Assumes responsibility for staffing, scheduling, productivity monitoring, and appropriate utilization of personnel to meet operational and clinical demands including partnership and cooperative management of resources with any contracted services as applicable
- Develops, implements, monitors, and maintains accountability for departmental operating and capital budgets.
- Monitors financial performance and implements strategies to optimize labor, inventory, equipment utilization, and operational efficiency.
- Establishes, monitors, and reports key performance indicators related to quality, productivity, customer satisfaction, instrument availability, turnaround times, and operational performance.
- Develops, implements, and evaluates action plans to achieve continuous performance improvement and operational excellence.
- Ensures a safe environment through the implementation of evidence-based practices, infection prevention standards, regulatory requirements, and safe work processes.
- Collaborates with perioperative, procedural, and clinical leaders to proactively identify and resolve operational issues impacting patient care and procedural readiness.
Quality, Safety, and Customer Experience
- Accountable for departmental outcomes including quality indicators, regulatory compliance, customer satisfaction, physician satisfaction, employee engagement, and operational performance metrics.
- Leads quality improvement initiatives, root cause analyses, and corrective action plans to improve patient safety and department performance.
- Ensures compliance with sterilization monitoring, instrument tracking, biological testing, documentation requirements, and quality assurance programs.
- Maintains continuous survey readiness and supports accreditation and regulatory inspections.
- Promotes a culture of service excellence and responsiveness to internal and external customers.
Professional Growth and Workforce Development
- Creates a learning environment that promotes professional growth, evidence-based practice, innovation, and continuous learning.
- Ensures appropriate onboarding, orientation, training, competency validation, certification compliance, and ongoing education of team members.

- Facilitates effective communication and collaboration across departments to ensure efficient service delivery and achievement of organizational goals.
- Serves as a resource and liaison for clinical and operational partners regarding sterile processing practices, standards, and operational concerns.
- Promotes a respectful, inclusive, and team-oriented work environment.
Workplace Safety
- Responsible for maintaining a work environment that minimizes occupational illness and injury through compliance with safety regulations, safe work practices, and infection prevention standards.
- Identifies workplace risks and implements corrective actions to protect staff, patients, visitors, and organizational resources.
- Ensures staff adherence to departmental safety policies, personal protective equipment requirements, and regulatory standards related to sterile processing operations.
Job Requirements

* Five years clinical experience in Surgical Services, Sterile Processing or similar services. * 2 years of progressive leadership experience |
| Education |
* Associate degree in health care, healthcare management, applied science, or healthcare business . * Certified Sterile Processing Tech. |
| Specialized Knowledge and Skills |
* Proficiency with Microsoft Office, specifically Word, Excel and PowerPoint * Strong organizational skills and experience in handling numerous projects simultaneously * Excellent interpersonal skills in order to effectively communicate with physicians and caregivers at all levels of the organization * Demonstrate the ability of leadership, team building, mentoring or coaching skills * Knowledge and ability to perform financial and cost benefit analysis * Demonstrate skill, knowledge or experience in CSS * Further development of planning, organizing, staffing, evaluating and budgeting skills * Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job. |
