Position description

Junior/Assistant/Associate Specialist

The Chesner lab at the Mission Bay campus at UCSF is seeking a highly motivated Specialist to join our research team. Our laboratory investigates the molecular mechanisms that regulate anti-tumor immune responses in prostate cancer, with a particular focus on understanding how hormones influence antigen presentation and T cell responses throughout prostate cancer progression. The position will involve a combination of molecular biology techniques and work with mouse models of prostate cancer. The successful candidate will have opportunities to contribute to scientific publications and present research findings at national conferences.

Job Responsibilities: Primary tasks include mouse handling skills such as tumor injection, oral gavage, tumor measurement, and tumor dissection. Additional responsibilities will include performing experiments utilizing western blot analysis, RNA isolation, PCR, tissue culture, immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry. General duties will include participation in basic lab support activities, organization, and weekly group meetings.

Required Qualifications:



  • Specialists appointed at the Junior rank must possess a bachelor's degree (or equivalent degree) in a relevant area of study, such as biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, biology, or immunology or at least four years of research experience.
  • Specialists appointed at the Assistant rank must possess a master's degree (or equivalent degree) in a relevant area of study, such as biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, biology, and immunology or a baccalaureate degree with at least three or more years of research experience.
  • Specialists appointed at the Associate rank must possess a master's degree (or equivalent degree) in a relevant area of study, such as biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, biology, and immunology or at least five to ten years of research experience. Associate Specialists are expected to have a record of academic accomplishments, including contributions to published or in-press research in the field.
  • At least 1 year of previous independent laboratory experience outside of required coursework.
  • Must have prior experience working with mice.
  • Expertise in basic molecular biology techniques, electrophoresis, cloning, western blotting, and qRT-PCR.
  • Previous experience using FACS analyzers and sorters.
  • Expertise growing and manipulating mammalian cell lines in culture.
  • Must be highly motivated, demonstrate a strong commitment to scientific research, and have the enthusiasm to learn new methods and skills.
  • Must be an effective communicator who is organized, detail-oriented, proactive in addressing research challenges, and able to work successfully both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Must be able to keep a complete and detailed laboratory notebook of experimental procedures and results and accurately archive, label, and document data for publication, proposals, and/or presentations.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and Adobe software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Illustrator, and Prism.
  • Candidates must meet the required qualifications at the time of appointment

Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience in immunohistochemistry, ChIP, immunofluorescence, or confocal microscopy.
  • Computational experience using Python or R.
  • At least a 2-year commitment.
