Power Solutions International (PSI) is a leader in large gen-set packaging and enclosures. We provide turnkey, custom power packages that integrate alternators, cooling systems, controls, switchgear, cabling, and protection, delivered as containerized, skid, or walk-in solutions. Our team manages the full lifecycle from application engineering and 3D design to structural fabrication, wiring and piping, sound and thermal management, code compliance, factory acceptance testing, and site support. With scalable production capacity and disciplined program management, PSI delivers repeatable quality and reliable performance on complex builds for mission-critical and industrial applications worldwide. Summary: Under the supervision of the Field Service Manager, the Field Service Technician III - Data Center Power Systems provides field support for PSI-powered standby and mission-critical power products, primarily diesel standby generator sets, with expanding support of natural gas, dual-fuel and future data center power platforms. This is a home-based, travel-intensive role focused on onsite commissioning support, remote and onsite troubleshooting, and field quality investigation and containment. The Technician is PSI's onsite technical representative to packagers, EPCs, service partners and end users, and is responsible for resolving field issues quickly while feeding accurate technical and failure data back to PSI Quality, Engineering and Technical Support. The assigned territory is the South Central and Southeastern U.S. (TX, LA, GA and surrounding states), with additional travel throughout North America as requested. Essential Responsibilities:
- Provide onsite commissioning and startup support for PSI-powered standby generator sets at data center and other mission-critical facilities, verifying that installation, fuel, cooling, air and exhaust systems conform to PSI specifications, approved drawings and commercial scope prior to and during customer commissioning events.
- Support and witness site acceptance, load bank, load acceptance and integrated systems testing; record and validate engine performance data, confirm operating parameters are within PSI published limits, and drive resolution of punch-list items affecting engine or package acceptance.
- Troubleshoot engine, fuel system, cooling, aftertreatment and control/ECM faults both remotely (phone, email, Teams, datalog and plot review) and onsite, using PSI diagnostic software, gauges, meters and electrical test equipment in accordance with PSI engineering directives.
- Serve as PSI's onsite technical resource to genset packagers, EPCs, electrical contractors, commissioning agents, authorized service providers and end-user site teams; escalate to PSI Technical Support and Engineering through established escalation paths when required.
- Lead field quality investigations: capture and document failure data, photographs, datalogs/plots, serial and build configuration, and site conditions to support root cause analysis with PSI Quality and Engineering.
- Execute field containment actions including inspections, retrofits, rework and service campaigns; accurately track and report affected population, completion status and findings to Quality, Engineering and Program Management.
- Recover, tag and return failed components for teardown analysis in accordance with PSI parts return, warranty and evidence-retention requirements.
- Complete and submit field service reports, trip reports, warranty documentation, expense reports and customer- or site-specific documentation accurately and on time.
- Provide technical guidance, onsite mentoring and workmanship verification to PSI authorized service providers (3PI) and dealer technicians performing warranty, campaign and commissioning work.
- Conduct operation and maintenance training for customer and service-partner personnel when required.
- Communicate product problems, repeat issues and field trends to Quality, Engineering and Technical Publications to drive corrective action and updates to service literature.
- Determine the acceptance of engine installation and reassembly performed under the Technician's supervision for the purpose of activating PSI warranty coverage.
- Comply with all PSI and customer site safety requirements, including data center access and escort protocols, lockout/tagout, arc flash and PPE requirements, hot work and confined space permitting.
- Remain technically competent and current on assigned and emerging PSI product lines through company-provided training.
- All other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements:
- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent experience, including the ability to apply math (fractions, ratios, measurements) and to read, comprehend and convert instruction manuals, schematics and diagrams into work.
- Five or more years of hands-on field service experience on diesel engines or standby generator sets, with demonstrated flexibility across a wide range of work responsibilities, effective problem solving with a focus on delivering results, strong mechanical aptitude with a range of power and diagnostic tools, and high reliability.
- Working knowledge of diesel engine systems including high-pressure fuel injection, air and turbocharging, cooling, lubrication, exhaust and after treatment, and starting and charging systems.
- Working knowledge of standby power packages and site systems, including switch gear, automatic transfer switches, paralleling and generator controls, load banks, fuel supply and day tank systems, and remote radiator or heat exchanger cooling.
- Ability to interpret engine and package wiring diagrams, electrical schematics and installation drawings, and to use engine diagnostic and datalogging software to isolate faults.
- Proficient in Electrical diagnostics.
- Detail orientated.
- Demonstrated ability to document field findings clearly and professionally, and to communicate directly with customers, EPCs, consulting engineers and internal engineering teams.
- Familiar with generator controllers like ComAp and Deep Sea or ability to learn.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, self-manage territory scheduling and travel logistics, and respond to emergency callouts including nights, weekends and holidays as required.
- Travel up to 75% of the time, primarily within the South Central and Southeastern U.S. (TX, LA, GA and surrounding states), with additional travel to other North American regions as requested. Overnight and short-notice travel required.
- Understanding of individual customer needs; being available when the customer starts and ends their working day and work time based on equipment availability.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record, and a valid passport or the ability to obtain one for travel within North America.
- Ability to satisfy customer site access requirements typical of data center and mission-critical environments, including background screening and badging.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, work in confined spaces and at elevation, and work in high noise, high temperature and outdoor environments while wearing required PPE.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Direct experience commissioning standby diesel generator sets in data center or other mission-critical facilities, including participation in integrated systems testing.
- Factory or OEM training on medium- to high-horsepower diesel engine platforms and their service literature and diagnostic tools.
- Experience with engine and generator control systems and their configuration and diagnostic software, and with PLC-based controls (Modicon, Allen Bradley, Siemens).
- Subject matter expertise in the operation, repair and installation of switchgear, diesel and natural gas fuel systems, and load banks in power generation or a similar industry.
- Experience with formal quality processes and root cause methodology (8D, 5-Why, fishbone) and with executing field containment or recall campaigns.
- Experience with natural gas, dual-fuel or alternative-fuel power generation products.
- EGSA, ASE or equivalent technical certification; NFPA 70E and OSHA 10/30 training.
- Residence in or willingness to relocate to the primary territory (Texas, Louisiana or Georgia metro areas) near a major airport.
