The Assistant Director is a full-time, live-in, twelve-month professional and a key educator within the Division of Student Affairs. The position advances student learning, belonging, wellbeing, safety, and accountability through staff leadership, responsive operations, and educational student conduct practices.
As a designated conduct officer for Housing and Residence Life, the Assistant Director hears and adjudicates assigned student behavior cases and provides conduct and crisis support throughout the academic term.

| Primary Function of Organizational Unit |
The primary purpose of the Housing and Residence Life department is to provide housing accommodation and a certain quality of life for over 6,500 students. To provide living accommodations which are clean, safe, healthy, and comfortable while enhancing a certain quality of life, which supports the academic mission of North Carolina A&T State University. The Residence Life program is designed to provide an environment which supports students in their academic pursuits, encourages interpersonal development, and offers opportunities for individual growth and challenge. | Minimum Requirements |
Required:
- Master's degree completed or in progress in higher education administration, college student personnel, counseling, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and relevant leadership experience may be considered.
- Three to four years of progressively responsible experience in student affairs, housing and residence life, student conduct, or a closely related setting.
- Demonstrated experience supervising, coaching, or leading professional, graduate, or paraprofessional staff.
- Demonstrated experience responding to student concerns, behavioral incidents, emergencies, or crisis situations.
- Experience hearing or adjudicating student conduct or community standards cases.
- Experience coordinating complex operations, facility transitions, housing assignments, camps, conferences, or large-scale events.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of student development theory, residential education, and inclusive community practices.
- Strong supervisory, coaching, performance-management, and team-development skills.
- Ability to interpret policy, exercise sound judgment, and manage competing priorities in a complex residential environment.
- Demonstrated skill in student conduct adjudication, conflict resolution, crisis response, and educational accountability.
- Effective written, verbal, interpersonal, and cross-functional communication skills.
- Ability to analyze operational and student-behavior data, identify trends, and recommend improvements.
- Commitment to accurate documentation, confidentiality, fairness, consistency, and timely follow-through.
- Ability to participate in an on-call structure and support a 24/7 residential operation.
- Strong project-management, logistics, scheduling, and cross-functional coordination skills.
- Ability to manage detailed operational plans while responding flexibly to changing conditions.

- Four or more years of full-time experience in Housing and Residence Life or a comparable residential program.
- Experience with building readiness, summer operations, desk operations, openings, closings, or related occupancy activities.
- Experience with on-call response and live-on university housing responsibilities.
- Experience with conduct or case-management software, such as Maxient or Advocate.
- Experience supporting students from varied backgrounds and needs.
- Experience using assessment findings and operational data to improve programs and services.
- Experience leading residence hall openings, closings, summer housing, or conference operations.
- Experience with occupancy-management, scheduling, access-control, or project-tracking systems.
