Responsibilities

Make a Meaningful Impact on Behavioral Healthcare.

As a Phlebotomist at The Psychiatric Institute of Washington, you will be responsible for collecting blood and other specimens, preparing specimens for laboratory processing, and maintaining specimen integrity in accordance with facility and contracted laboratory guidelines. You will work closely with Nursing leadership, patients, and laboratory partners while helping ensure medical and patient-care supplies are appropriately maintained and available.

What You Will Do

As our Phlebotomist, you will play an important role in supporting our nursing team and ensuring accurate, timely laboratory services. You will:

  • Perform venipuncture, finger sticks, and other specimen collection procedures based on provider orders, with a focus on safe and successful collection.
  • Prepare, label, and handle specimens according to facility procedures and contracted laboratory requirements.
  • Coordinate with contracted laboratory partners to support appropriate specimen collection, pickup, processing, and timely return of results.
  • Prioritize ordered laboratory and specimen collections and assist Nursing Leadership with waived testing and STAT specimen needs as appropriate.
  • Provide reassurance and support to patients during collection procedures and appropriately document patient refusals.
  • Follow patient-identification, infection-control, PPE, HIPAA, and therapeutic-boundary requirements to promote patient and staff safety.
  • Order, inventory, and maintain the Nursing department's medical and patient-care supplies, ensuring items are available, properly stored, and within expiration dates.
  • Communicate effectively with Nursing leadership and team members regarding concerns, safety issues, laboratory needs, and opportunities for continuous improvement.

We are looking for candidateswith strong communication and interpersonal skills, excellent organization and attention to detail, a collaborative approach to patient care, and the capacity to remain calm and professional in challenging situations.


Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Phlebotomy Certificate or current RN/LPN nursing license in DC
  • Phlebotomy or nursing education and training for the credential held
  • CPR/BLS Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of venipuncture and proper laboratory/specimen collection and preparation practices.
  • Ability to effectively organize, prioritize, and manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Ability to follow infection-control, patient-safety, confidentiality, and specimen-handling requirements.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to work with required clinical and organizational systems.
  • Handle with Care, and UHS Verbal De-Escalation training must be completed as required. Training is provided during orientation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-3 years of related phlebotomy, laboratory, nursing, or healthcare experience.
  • Previous experience collecting specimens in a hospital, behavioral health, or other patient-care environment.
  • Experience working with electronic health records and laboratory systems.
