Medical Assistant (MA) - RWJBarnabas Health

A typical day for a Medical Assistant may include:

  • Prepare and room pediatric patients for examinations and specialty visits
  • Obtain and accurately document vital signs, height, weight, medication history, allergies, chief complaint, and other required clinical information
  • Perform point-of-care testing in accordance with established policies, procedures, and competency requirements
  • Perform 12-lead EKGs/ECGs, ensuring appropriate lead placement and obtaining high-quality tracings for physician interpretation
  • Recognize poor-quality or abnormal EKG tracings that require prompt review by the appropriate licensed clinical professional; the Medical Assistant does not independently interpret or diagnose EKG findings
  • Assist with other specialty-specific diagnostic testing and clinical procedures within the Medical Assistants documented training and scope of practice
  • Prepare examination and procedure rooms and ensure appropriate supplies and equipment are available
  • Follow infection-prevention, patient-identification, specimen-handling, and safety protocols
  • Maintain appropriate cleaning and disinfection of clinical equipment and patient-care areas
  • Assist physicians and other clinical team members during examinations and procedures as appropriate
  • Document patient information accurately, thoroughly, and efficiently in the electronic medical record
  • Review patient charts in preparation for upcoming appointments and identify missing clinical information, orders, results, referrals, or documentation requiring follow-up
  • Maintain accurate and timely documentation while protecting patient confidentiality
  • Route messages, clinical information, and documentation to the appropriate provider or department
  • Experience with Epic is strongly preferred, including familiarity with patient charts, In Basket messaging, orders, referrals, and clinical workflows
  • Assist with prior authorization activities for medications, diagnostic testing, imaging, procedures, and other services as assigned
  • Assist with referral coordination and follow-up on outstanding authorizations, orders, and supporting clinical documentation
  • Communicate with insurance companies, pharmacies, patients and families, and other departments when necessary to facilitate patient care
  • Assist with scanning, faxing, medical forms, telephone messages, scheduling support, and other administrative responsibilities as needed
  • Monitor assigned work queues, messages, and other departmental tasks and complete them within established timeframes

  • This position offers a consistent Monday through Friday day shift schedule, allowing you to build strong patient relationships while maintaining a work-life balance.
  • You have a high school diploma/GED and successful completion of all Orientation Program is required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant Program, current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential (AAMA, AECA, AMCA, AMT, NAHP, NCCT, NCMA, or NHA), and current American Heart Association BLS certification is preferred.
  • A minimum of two years of pediatric, hospital-based ambulatory practice, and/or specialty practice MA experience is preferred.
  • Previous experience assisting with prior authorizations, referrals, and insurance processes preferred.
