POSITION SUMMARY:
In addition to new-hire education, this position provides ongoing training, remediation, and continuing education for existing clinical support staff. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Nursing, the Educator also facilitates RN peer review and related learning activities in response to identified needs, changes in clinical practice, new equipment or workflows, quality initiatives, and organizational standards. During periods of significant educator downtime, the position may provide clinical support within the employee's licensure, demonstrated competencies, and assigned scope of practice, as directed by nursing leadership.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Medical Assistant Education & Training
- Develop and deliver structured training programs for newly hired and/or inexperienced Medical Assistants.
- Provide education ranging from basic workplace professionalism and patient communication to advanced clinical competencies within the MA scope of practice.
- Provide individualized instruction based on each learner's experience, knowledge, and demonstrated competency.
- Utilize a combination of classroom instruction, demonstrations, hands-on practice, simulation, observation, and supervised clinical experiences.
- Teach and reinforce organizational policies, procedures, workflows, safety standards, and expectations.
- Serve as a clinical resource and mentor for MAs during their onboarding and development.
- Clinical Skills Training
- Provide hands-on education and competency assessment in applicable Medical Assistant responsibilities, including but not limited to:
- Professional communication and patient service.
- Patient identification and safety practices.
- Patient intake and rooming procedures.
- Obtaining and accurately documenting vital signs.
- Obtaining and documenting medical history.
- Medication reconciliation.
- Point-of-care testing (POCT).
- Specimen collection and handling.
- Infection prevention and control.
- Standard precautions and appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Vaccine and medication preparation, administration, documentation, and related patient education.
- Clinical equipment and supply use.
- Electronic health record (EHR) workflows and clinical documentation.
- Patient education and appropriate escalation of patient concerns.
- Other clinical procedures and responsibilities appropriate to the Medical Assistant role and organizational scope of practice.
- Competency & Performance Validation
- Establish and maintain competency-based training and evaluation processes for Medical Assistants.
- Observe employees performing clinical skills and provide timely, constructive feedback.
- Validate competency through skills demonstrations, return demonstrations, observation, testing, or other appropriate evaluation methods.
- Identify knowledge or performance gaps and develop targeted education or remediation plans.
- Maintain appropriate documentation of training and competency completion.
- Partner with leaders and clinical staff when additional coaching, retraining, or performance support is needed.
- Maintain new hire orientation checklist is up to date.
- Ongoing Education
- Assess ongoing educational needs among Medical Assistants and develop education to address identified gaps.
- Provide remedial, refresher training and continuing education as needed.
- Educate staff on changes to clinical procedures, workflows, equipment, technology, and organizational policies.
- Support implementation of new clinical initiatives and standard work.
- Develop and facilitate in-services, skills labs, competency reviews, and other educational activities.
- Use quality, safety, patient experience, and operational data to help identify opportunities for MA education and development.
- Collaboration & Professional Development
- Collaborate with clinical leadership, providers, nursing staff, quality teams, and other departments to ensure MA education aligns with organizational standards.
- Serve as a resource to MAs and clinical leaders regarding clinical skills, workflows, and competency expectations.
- Promote a culture of professionalism, accountability, patient safety, teamwork, and continuous learning.
- Model excellent patient care and professional behavior.
- Stay current with relevant clinical practices, organizational standards, regulatory requirements, and Medical Assistant scope-of-practice expectations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Medical Assistant Certification and clinical experience of more than 5 years.
- Ability to relate well to people from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
- Able to effectively teach, correct and encourage.
- Strong written and oral communication skills necessary.
- Must effectively be able lead in one-to-one, mentoring relationships as well as larger audience settings.
- Ability to teach clinical concepts and procedures to individuals with varying levels of experience.
- Ability to provide constructive feedback and assess competency objectively.
- Commitment to patient safety, quality care, professionalism, and continuous learning.
