Business Development Leader - East Michigan & Healthcare
Fishbeck | East Michigan | Full-time
Who We Are
Fishbeck has been employee-owned since its founding in 1956, not as a structure, but as a belief. We are architects, engineers, scientists, and constructors, but more than that, we are people who believe nothing great is made alone. For nearly 70 years, across every generation of leadership, the same values have held. That continuity is not an accident. It is something we protect.
What Design Means to Us
Design is one of the most human things we do. It takes curiosity, conviction, and the willingness to care deeply about how something is experienced, not just how it functions. We are looking for people who get genuinely excited about ideas and find real meaning in the work itself.
How We Work
We work the way we think, collaboratively and with intent. Every person here brings something distinct, and we lean into that. We surround ourselves with people who challenge and complement us, who take ownership not just of their work but of each other's growth. We believe complacency is not an option, and we stay curious because we actually enjoy what we do.
What Growth Means to Us
Growth is not just a number. Increasing sales matters, but it is only the beginning. To us, growth means earning the trust to secure larger, more meaningful work. It means relationships that deepen over time, where clients bring us in earlier and rely on us for more. And it means innovation: new ways to serve, new markets to enter, and new ideas that change what is possible for our clients and their communities. When we grow this way, our people grow with us.
The Role
You are here to find the problems worth solving and foster connections to do so.
At Fishbeck, we think of our people as problem seekers and problem solvers. Our architects, engineers, scientists, and constructors are exceptional problem solvers. This role is the problem seeker. As a Business Development Leader at Fishbeck, you will be out in the market and at the tables where decisions take shape, listening for the challenges client leaders are facing, often before they have been named. Then you will connect those challenges to the people and capabilities across Fishbeck that can solve them. This role is about more than generating leads and winning pursuits. It is about challenging the assumptions of what an A/E firm can be, partnering with market leaders on a strategy that is clear and executable, and launching new strategic efforts with a 20-year view of where our clients, and healthcare in particular, are headed.
A Role at a Turning Point
You are joining Fishbeck at a pivotal moment. Our East Michigan presence is growing, and we are building toward a dedicated healthcare practice with a long view of where care is headed. This role sits at the center of both, and you will help shape what each becomes.
Now: Accelerate East Michigan. From day one, you will help drive growth across our East Michigan markets, opening doors, building relationships, and winning work wherever the strongest opportunities are. This is where you will build the regional network, client trust, and internal connections that everything else stands on.
Next: Lead Healthcare. Over time, your focus will shift toward healthcare. You will help define our strategy with health systems, hospitals, and care providers, and become the person who brings that practice to life. There is no playbook to inherit here. You will help write it.
The Foundation
The essentials. These are expected, measured, and the baseline for success in this role.
- Generate and manage a strong pipeline of leads, pursuits, and client opportunities that meets annual sales and market growth goals.
- Identify, develop, and convert new opportunities across East Michigan, with a growing focus on health systems, hospitals, ambulatory care providers, academic medical centers, and specialty care organizations.
- Build and maintain relationships with owners, executives, facilities leaders, and planning teams across the region, and increasingly with healthcare and clinical stakeholders, through consistent engagement.
- Lead go/no-go decisions, capture planning, and pursuit strategy for key opportunities.
- Shape and lead proposal pursuits, interviews, and presentations in collaboration with project managers, technical leaders, and marketing teams.
- Represent Fishbeck at industry associations, conferences, and community events.
- Use CRM and pipeline data to track activity, forecast revenue, and report progress against market goals.
The Bigger Impact
Where this role is truly defined. This is the work that goes beyond typical business development.
- Seek out the problems worth solving by understanding client challenges, operations, and long-term goals deeply enough to see issues before they are defined.
- Connect client challenges to the full breadth of Fishbeck's architecture, engineering, science, and construction resources, bringing together the right people to drive solutions.
- Grow existing client relationships from single projects into long-term partnerships, positioning Fishbeck for larger and more strategic work.
- Turn East Michigan momentum into a launchpad for healthcare, recognizing where today's clients, partners, and relationships open doors into health systems and care providers.
- Partner with regional and healthcare market leaders to develop, own, and execute a growth strategy with clear priorities, measurable goals, and accountable action plans.
- Challenge long-held assumptions about how an A/E firm engages its markets, healthcare most of all, and bring forward new models for how we create value for clients.
- Initiate and lead long-range strategic efforts with a 20-year outlook, anticipating shifts in care delivery, technology, workforce, reimbursement, and community health needs.
- Bring market intelligence back into the firm, turning industry trends, capital plans, and client priorities into insight that shapes our decisions.
- Identify strategic partnerships, teaming opportunities, and new service offerings that expand what Fishbeck can offer.
- Mentor emerging professionals as problem seekers, helping build a firm-wide culture of client engagement and growth.
- Contribute to the continued evolution of Fishbeck's business development practices, processes, and strategy.

Why This Matters
The firm you are joining has been built and passed forward by every person who came before you. We are not looking for someone to fill a seat. We are looking for someone who will leave this place better than they found it, and we will do everything we can to make that possible. You are arriving at the right moment: the work you do in East Michigan today lays the foundation for the healthcare practice we will build together.
