Position description

The Department of Surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA invites applications for Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology. This tenured faculty position will be at the Associate or Full Professor level.

The Division of Surgical Oncology offers a state-of-the-art approach to cancer therapy that is centered around multi-disciplinary tumor boards and integrated practice clinics and prioritizes clinical/translational research and applied basic laboratory investigations related to the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of malignant solid tumors. Physician investigators within the division have special interest in pancreatic, breast, colon, and gastric cancers, as well as sarcoma, melanoma, and pseudomyxoma peritonei. The program is based at Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center and Wadsworth Veterans Administration Medical Center and now is extending into local communities. The Division of Surgical Oncology cultivates the next generation of cancer surgeons through world-class training, pioneering simulation programs, and specialized workshops; including the UCLA General Surgery Residency Program, UCLA Breast Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program, and Center for Advanced Surgical & Interventional Technology (CASIT) state-of-the-art surgical education and simulation training. UCLA is also home to the UCLA Surgeon-Scientist Basic Cancer Research Training Program, an NIH-funded T32 training grant that provides surgical residents with premier, multi-year mentored fellowship opportunities to pursue high-impact translational cancer research.

The ideal candidate is a distinguished surgical oncologist with outstanding accomplishments in leadership, clinical care, research, education and service, as well as a passion for interdisciplinary/interprofessional collaboration and institutional growth in a complex and evolving environment. Beyond distinction in their own surgical subspecialty, the ideal candidate will demonstrate the breadth of perspective and leadership capacity to understand, integrate, and advance the diverse surgical disciplines represented within the Division. They will possess the ability to lead across subspecialty boundaries and elevate the collective impact and national prominence of the Division. The successful candidate will combine exceptional clinical insight with superb communication skills and emotional intelligence, experience with strategic planning and financial stewardship, dedication to teaching, mentorship and faculty career development, a strong record of scholarly achievement, and unwavering commitments to professionalism, ethical leadership, and fostering an equitable environment through community engagement and the provision of equitable care. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to advancing multidisciplinary cancer care through collaboration with the UCLA Health Jonsson Comprehensive Cancer Center and colleagues across medical oncology, radiation oncology, and other clinical and research disciplines, while strengthening the Division's local, regional, and national prominence.

All candidates must hold an MD degree or equivalent, have appropriate academic credentials for a faculty appointment within the DGSOM at UCLA at the rank of associate or full professor, hold current board certification in General Surgery, and be eligible for medical licensure in California. Diplomates in Complex General Surgical Oncology are welcomed.

Confidential inquiries, nominations, or submissions of interest (i.e., curriculum vitae, informative personal statement, and response to UCLA's mission statement) are invited and will be considered until an appointment is made:

The targeted employment reference checks involve contacting the finalists' current and prior places of employment to ask whether there have been substantiated findings of misconduct that would violate the University's Faculty Code of Conduct. To implement this process, UCLA requires all applicants for Academic Senate faculty positions to complete, sign, and upload the form entitled "Authorization to Release Information" into RECRUIT as part of their application. If the applicant does not include the signed authorization to release information with the application materials, the application will be considered incomplete. As with any incomplete application, the application will not receive further consideration. Although all applicants for faculty recruitments must complete the entire application, only finalists (i.e., those to whom the department or other hiring unit would like to extend a formal offer) considered for Academic Senate faculty positions will be subject to targeted employment reference checks.
