The U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Research Service, Food Safety and Enteric Pathogens Unit, Ames, Iowa, invites applications for a Research Microbiologist position GS-12/13 ($79,582.00-$123,021.00 per annum). A scientist is needed to conduct research aligned with reducing the prevalence of human foodborne pathogens in livestock. The research will focus on developing and implementing various bioinformatic analyses and data analytics tools to identify patterns between phenotype and genotype of foodborne pathogens, with an emphasis on Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (announcement ARS-D22MWA-). The ideal candidate has experience with various bioinformatic analyses and data analytics tools to identify patterns, changes, and/or genes of interest in large datasets or identification of bacterial or host factors and elucidation of molecular mechanisms contributing to bacterial gene function. The successful candidate will join a group of scientists conducting similar research for other foodborne pathogens and food animals (cattle, swine, turkeys), and work closely with a microbial ecologist, immunologist, and STEC microbiologist on research objectives. Collectively, the group works to increase information and technologies needed to enhance pre-harvest food safety in the U.S. and around the world.
