Critical functions and duties include an ability to audit business and property records, prepare and maintain accurate tax rolls, complete thorough and accurate appraisals, defend appraisal valuations in Board of Review and Michigan Tax Tribunal forums, complete field work in a timely and effective manner, work through the equalization process with the County of Macomb's equalization director, supervise and direct the work activities and review the work product of subordinates in the Office of Assessing, and complete special assignments from the City Assessor.

This position has daily contact with property owners, so a customer service orientation and skill set is essential to job success. As the Office of Assessing carries a significant workload, all personnel must be committed to task and demonstrate a willingness to assist fellow assessors. The overall mission of the Office of Assessing is dependent upon the ability of its personnel to work together in a goal-oriented manner.

Under supervision of the City Assessor, the Appraiser III serves as the senior appraiser performing the more complex appraisals. Employees in this classification specialize in personal property or commercial and industrial appraisals. At this level the employee has primary responsibility for his or her specialization.
