Summary: Maintains all electrical distribution systems and individual circuits in all buildings, structures, and assets, both interior and exterior. Involved with the maintenance and construction of garden wide communication, safety and security, and energy management systems. Provides temporary electrical service for special events, including weddings, concerts, exhibits, festivals and displays.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:




  • Installs and maintains electrical and electrically controlled systems up to 600v for lighting, computers, HVAC, telephone, fountains, irrigation, fire and security systems.

  • Performs preventative maintenance on various pieces of electrical equipment, circuits and systems including emergency lighting and generator systems.

  • Installs temporary services.

  • Troubleshoots, repairs, and installs hardware and cabling for telephones and computers; installs various types and sizes of conduit and raceways.

  • Works with contractors and/or garden staff during office renovations and new construction projects.

  • Creates and maintains detailed records and drawings of all underground electrical utilities and locates buried utilities on a regular basis.

  • Maintains inventory of electrical supplies and light bulbs.

  • Identifies and initiates immediate corrective actions for any electrical code, NEC, or safety violation and assists Maintenance Manager in training of garden staff.

  • Determines best course of action to make repairs. Sets and/or adjusts priorities to ensure safety and reliability of electrical distribution systems or individual circuits and devices. Factors taken into consideration when making these decisions include: cost of materials and availability, longevity of repairs, scheduling safety while performing work around staff and visitors and resource conservation and green purchasing.

  • Ensures that all applicable safety standards are followed: informs employees/students/volunteers of safety guidelines and safe working practices and routinely monitors to enforce them.

  • May be required to service and program card access systems controlling doors and vehicle gates and program those systems via the Building Automation System (Andover)

  • Adapts or modifies work methods to reduce hazards.

  • Reports all accidents, injuries and near-miss accidents immediately.

  • May be asked to perform other tasks not solely related to making electrical repairs or new installations.

  • Behaves & communicates in a manner that promotes and fosters a culture of teamwork, cooperation, and respect within our division and throughout the Garden with all employees, supervisors/managers, volunteers, visitors and others.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position does not have direct supervisory responsibilities. However, at times, position may monitor performance and direct duties of contracted electricians working on site and/or other garden staff who may be assigned to assist on large projects or events.

Qualifications/Experience:




  • Minimum of two (2) years related apprenticeship technical background.

  • Minimum of five (5) years experience in electrical work, and knowledge of National Electrical Code.

  • Knowledge of the National Electrical Code and a willingness to keep up with changes in the code and industry practices.

  • Knowledge of safety rules related to working around electricity: (log out/ tag out).

  • Knowledge of the construction methods of historic and contemporary building and structures preferred.

  • Must be able to read electrical drawings and keep accurate records.

  • Ability to work at varying heights both indoors and out and operate various types of lift equipment.

  • Ability to work independently with little instruction; coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks, set deadlines, and complete projects in a timely manner.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively at all levels; must enjoy and feel comfortable interacting and working in close proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner.

  • Scheduling flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays as required.

  • Must have received or be willing to receive the COVID-19 vaccination by date of hire to be considered. Proof of vaccination will be required.

Education:




  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • An equivalent combination of skills, education and experience may be considered.

Computer Skills:




  • Able to use Internet to search for new products and/or methods and to obtain manufactures' literature and required material safety data sheets (MSDS).

  • Ability to close out work orders using TMA; keep electronic records; Microsoft Office and Auto Cad is a plus.

  • Requires ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate percentages and decimals.

  • Requires ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:




  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and clean insurable driving record (prior to employment).

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid chauffeur's license within (2) months of hire date is required.

  • Electrical license preferred.

Physical Demands:




  • Ability to climb ladders and work at varying heights and to operate a wide variety of personal lift equipment.

  • Ability to work outdoors for extended period of time during all seasons of the year.

  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including fall restraint.

  • Ability to lift at least 60 lbs and work with various pieces of equipment off ladders and/or lifts and over head.

  • Requires clarity of vision at 20 inches or less with the ability to bring objects into sharp focus.

  • Requires standing, walking, bending, stooping and reaching for extended periods of time-- 95% or more of the workday is standing on feet.

  • Ability to utilize computer keyboard (typing).

Work Environment:




  • Working in and around general construction conditions.

  • Work is performed at varying heights, around energized and moving equipment, and in all weather conditions for extended periods of time.
  • Work around energized electrical circuits and equipment with moving parts.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions (i.e., in temperatures over 100F as well as temperatures below 0F, in rain, snow and other inclement weather conditions as needed).
  • Comfortable working in immediate proximity to general public, in a safe and friendly manner.

  • Garden staff in area where electrical work is being performed and during planning for special events and festivals.
