Creighton University's Doctoral Program in Interdisciplinary Leadership seeks candidates from a social science-oriented scholarly field to join the program in an affiliate special faculty role as a Dissertation Faculty Member.

Dissertation Faculty Members teach a proposal construction class, then mentor a small group (4-6) of students through the process of completing their dissertations, including the proposal defense (via webinar), independent research, and finally, the final defense of their dissertations (also conducted through a webinar).

We offer our proposal construction class twice each year in our Fall 1 and Spring 2 terms. We hire 5-8 individuals in summer and early spring for these offerings. Training in the expectations and mechanics of our process begins after hiring and prior to the course starts.
The proposal construction class is a fully online eight-week course. After the course concludes, Dissertation Chairs continue to guide students (remotely) through the proposal and final defense stages of the applied Dissertation-In-Practice degree. Note that while contracting to serve as a Dissertation Chair requires teaching the course and mentoring students through the rest of our dissertation process, compensation for teaching the course and working with students after the course ends are separate activities. Teaching the course requires a teaching contract and is paid when services are rendered. Mentoring dissertation students after the course concludes is also compensated.

Dissertation faculty are paid at four points: 1) upon receipt of a signed contract to serve as a chair for a student; 2) after teaching the proposal construction class; 3) when a student successful defends their proposal; and 4) a final payment after the student successfully defends their dissertation.

Compensation system:



  • $250 per student upon assignment and receipt of signed contract
  • $500 per student for teaching the proposal construction class
  • $500 after a student successfully defends their proposal
  • $1000 after a student successfully defends their dissertation.



Full-time program faculty provide training in our approaches and expectations before the course starts. Furthermore, special dissertation faculty have free access to a personalized Creighton email address, our library system, and various software (such as Qualtrics and Zoom).

Applicants with experience in chairing dissertations and/or master's theses are encouraged to apply. While applicants with expertise in traditional quantitative or qualitative methods are encouraged to apply, so are individuals with expertise in critical race theory, justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, intersectionality, decolonization, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.

Qualifications



  • PhD or EdD in a social science-oriented discipline.
  • Experience in directing or chairing masters theses or doctoral level dissertations
  • Knowledge of, and experience with teaching traditional social science research methods, including quantitative or qualitative approaches.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with graduate level teaching and online teaching
  • A credible trajectory in research, scholarship, and academic publications
  • Knowledge of, and experience with leadership theories, applied/action research preferred.
  • Knowledge of, or familiarity with the mission of Creighton University as a Catholic, Jesuit university preferred.
  • Knowledge of, or familiarity with APA style preferred.

We accept applications for this position on a rolling basis. Interviews are held in May-June and November-December each year (the course is offered in August and March, respectively). Applicants will be reviewed using a two-stage process. First, the search committee will review submitted dossiers. Second, promising candidates will be interviewed by webinar. After the second stage, decisions on our pool of five to eight dissertation faculty members are made. Candidates will be notified of the search committee s decisions about four to six weeks before the proposal construction class starts. Required training (via webinars) occurs after hire.
