About the Job

The University of Minnesota School of Dentistry invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Developmental and Surgical Sciences. The department plays an integral role in the school's mission of advancing health through scientific discovery and translation, innovative education, and providing the highest-quality care for all communities.

We are seeking a dynamic, energetic, and visionary department chair with strong clinical, research and leadership skills to guide a multi-divisional department, which includes Hospital Dentistry, Orthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, and clinics for patients with Cleft Palate and orofacial abnormalities, geriatrics, and special needs.

This department also includes advanced education programs in Orthodontics, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, and Periodontology. Each program is engaged in education, research and clinical care. The chair must show an understanding and appreciation of this tripartite mission which should be advanced by creating and supporting diverse teams of professionals.

The Department Chair reports directly to the Dean of the School of Dentistry and is a member of the Dean's Executive Team, known as the Council of Chairs.

The School of Dentistry is one of six health care schools and centers within the Health Sciences at the University of Minnesota, and attracts high quality faculty and students. By fostering a highly collaborative environment, the School of Dentistry has achieved an international reputation for its research, education, and patient care.

Qualifications

Qualifications Required:

  • DMD/DDS or equivalent degree, with a broad scope of academic and clinical knowledge.
  • ADA CODA Accredited Dental Education or equivalency (ICA or Completion of an advanced program in dentistry).
  • Candidates must also be eligible for a tenured appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, which requires an ongoing record of exceptional teaching, research and scholarship, and service. Excellence in both communication and administrative skills is required.
  • Experience leading, supervising, or managing the development of teams and programs.
  • Superior communication skills and the ability to connect with diverse constituencies.
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills, exemplified by the ability to lead teams, work effectively and collaboratively with multiple groups and diverse constituencies, and a demonstrated commitment to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Have leadership competencies such as: strategic, collaborative, collegial
  • Have sustained success as an NIDCR/NIH-funded researcher
  • Eligibility for Minnesota dental licensure
  • Experience in clinical practice
  • Knowledge of predoctoral and advanced education curriculum
  • Experience advancing equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Experience in budget management
  • An understanding of interprofessional education and collaborative practice
