The University of Minnesota Medical School's Department of Radiation Oncology has an opening in the Medical Physics Section. Academic rank, compensation and appointment type will be based on qualifications and experience. This unique opportunity provides Medical Physics support to the Department of Radiation Oncology at M Health Fairview's University of Minnesota Medical Center and the University of Minnesota's Veterinary Medical Center. Candidates should have a strong research and teaching background. A doctoral degree in Physics or Medical Physics and ABR board certification or board eligibility for certification is required. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The Department of Radiation Oncology's main clinic is at the University of Minnesota Medical Center (UMMC), located on the east bank of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis. Equipment at the main campus includes Accuray Radixact, Varian TrueBeam, Elekta Synergy (scheduled to be replaced within the next year), Elekta GammaKnife Icon, Elekta Flexitron HDR unit, and a Philips big bore CT scanner. Treatment planning systems include Pinnacle, Eclipse, Oncentra, Precision, and GammaPlan. Surface Image Guided Radiation Therapy is employed using the C-RAD system on the C-Arm linacs. Mosaiq R &V and Epic records are used throughout the system. There is active research in SBRT (lung, liver, and spine), TBI, TSET, HDR and LDR brachytherapy, including eye plaque and GammaTile brain implants, quantitative imaging, radiobiology, immunotherapy for solid tumors, and translational oncology.

The University of Minnesota's Veterinary Medical Center (VMC) is a full service specialty hospital in St Paul (4.5 miles from the UMMC) that currently houses the only veterinary linear accelerator in the state of MN. The veterinary radiation oncology service benefits from a close and highly collaborative relationship Department of Radiation Oncology in the Medical School. The VMC purchased a new Varian EDGE with HDMLC, high intensity mode, and perfect pitch couch. Eclipse, ARIA and Velocity will support planning and delivery. The expected installation completion date for the EDGE is estimated to be January 2023.

The candidate will be part of a group of 9 physicists, 2 physics residents, and 7 dosimetrists. The candidate will participate in all aspects of radiation therapy physics, including commissioning of new units (e.g. EDGE), linac and patient specific QA, treatment planning, brachytherapy, and radiosurgery, and is expected to contribute to teaching and research programs within the department.

The Department of Radiation Oncology houses a CAMPEP accredited Medical Physics Graduate program (M.S. and Ph.D.), a CAMPEP accredited Medical Physics residency program, and a Radiation Oncology Medical Residency program. Physics faculty are expected to participate in didactic teaching in graduate and residency programs, advise MS and PhD students, and serve on the graduate examination committees.
