Electrician I

General Summary:

UMass Boston is a major research university with specialized and highly critical electrical systems, including emergency power and lighting, research laboratory equipment, uninterruptible power supplies and data networking equipment. Persons in the Electrician I position at UMass Boston test, repair, install and maintain various types of electrical systems and equipment at a journeyman level of performance.

Examples of Duties:

• Tests, repairs, installs and maintains various types of electrical systems and equipment by operating the appropriate equipment and tools to ensure proper operation and functioning of the system or equipment.
• Examines and tests elements of electrical systems and equipment to locate obvious faults, including but not limited to blown fuses, short circuits, broken wires, loose connections and worn motor brushes equipment by using appropriate equipment and by reading schematics, diagrams and outlines to identify and correct operational problems.
• Replaces faulty switches, sockets, plugs, fuses, insulators, ballasts, bulbs and other simple elements of electrical systems, fixtures and appliances.
• Replaces defective equipment parts such as gears, bushings and bearings and other related electrical parts.
• Repairs and maintains electrical equipment, such as meters, generators, transformers, regulators, wiring switches, alarm systems and control systems (except for elevator control equipment) by locating and determining the reason for the malfunction through the use of testing instruments such as ammeters, oscilloscopes and testing lamps; tests electrical equipment, such as generators and heaters, for the purpose of determining safety and efficiency.
• Reads and interprets blueprints, diagrams, drawings, sketches and specifications required to perform assigned work.
• Coordinates work with other trades as required to accomplish repair, maintenance or installation projects.
• Performs related duties such as reviewing technical literature to keep current of developments in the electrical field; resetting fire alarm systems; deciding when to shut-off main electrical power supplies in an emergency; setting up, breaking down and/or moving staging; drafting schematics, diagrams and outlines; preparing work reports and training other employees.

Qualifications:

• Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Electrician's license issued by the State Examiners of Electricians and Massachusetts Driver's License.
• Knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations and codes that governing the electrical trade and the ability to apply such knowledge to the performance of assigned duties.
• Knowledge of the principles and theory of electricity, including the application of such principles and theory to the maintenance, repair and installation of electric distribution systems, motor control circuitry, devices and electrical generation systems.
• Knowledge of the types and uses of hand tools ordinarily employed in performing electrical work and the ability to skillfully use such tools in the performance of assigned duties. These include, but are not limited to tools such as hammers, saws, wrenches, pliers, taps, dies, screwdrivers, chisels and hand-operated drills.
• Knowledge of the types and uses of hand-held power tools ordinarily employed in performing electrical work and the ability to skillfully use such tools in the performance of assigned duties. These include, but are not limited to, power drills, power saws and power hammers.
• Knowledge of the types and uses of equipment, including testing equipment, ordinarily employed in performing electrical work and the ability to skillfully use such equipment in the performance of assigned duties. These include, but are not limited to, ammeters, oscilloscopes and testing lamps.
• Knowledge of the types and uses of measuring equipment ordinarily employed in performing electrical work and the ability to skillfully use such devices in the performance of assigned duties. These include, but are not limited to, gauges, levels, rulers and steel squares.
• Provide hands tools, specialty and power tools will be provided by University.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as blueprints, plans, diagrams, drawings, sketches, specifications and installation instructions as required to perform assigned duties.
• Knowledge of safety practices and precautions observed in the electrical trade.
• Knowledge of inspection techniques used in the electrical trade.
• Ability to perform arithmetical computations with speed and accuracy (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
• Ability to perform algebraic calculations to determine voltage, amperage and resistance factors.
• Ability to apply electrical formulas and conversion table to assigned tasks.
• Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
• Ability to write clearly and concisely.
• Ability to stand for prolonged periods of time.
• Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
• Ability to work in cramped or confined spaces.
• Ability to access spaces via ladders, stairways, scaffolding, aerial or scissor lift, catwalks, etc. with out restriction.
• Ability to make decisions and react quickly in emergency situations.
• Sufficient near-visual acuity, depth perception, field of vision and color vision necessary for making connections, soldering and splicing wires.
