Social Work Full-Time Instructor or Assistant Professor

The UMD Department of Social Work invites applications for a full-time term faculty position. This is a non-tenure-track appointment for fall semester 2023 and spring semester 2024, with possible extension as needed by the department. The appointment begins August 21, 2023.

Candidates will be considered for the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor, determined by qualifications. A master's degree is required for the rank of Instructor (9404), and a doctorate is required for the rank of Assistant Professor (9403).

Job duties and responsibilities include teaching and service. Teaching duties include in class teaching, assessment, office hours and student advising. Service duties include meeting attendance, committee work and other service and outreach activities.

Applicants should be able to teach a wide range of social work courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels such as Global Issues; Individual, Family & Group Practice; Introduction to Social Work Research; American Indian SW Practice; Advanced Practice in Mental Health; Field; Grant Writing, child welfare courses; and others.

Required Qualifications:
1) MSW / MA / ME.D. or equivalent from a regionally accredited institution is required for the rank of Instructor. A doctorate is required for the rank of Assistant Professor.
2) Commitment to fostering diversity across campus, the social work curriculum, and the social work department.

Preferred Qualifications:
1) A Master's Degree in Social Work (MSW) from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.
2) Valid Minnesota social work license or verification of eligibility for licensure by the Minnesota Board of Social Work.
3) Two years post-MSW practice experience (required for practice courses).
4) Social work practice experience in specific courses assigned to teach.
5) Demonstrated success working effectively with culturally diverse students, colleagues, and communities, including intercultural communication skills, awareness of diverse cultural values and beliefs, and willingness to examine your own cultural biases.
6) Experience, knowledge base and commitment to American Indian and/or Indigenous people and communities.
7) Evidence of effective academic classroom teaching or professional training experience.
8) Demonstrated skills related to the development and implementation of on-line courses.
9) Evidence of effective communication skills necessary for a faculty position.

The Department of Social Work is one of five departments in the College of Education and Human Service Professions. Meeting the needs of American Indian and rural communities has been central to the department since its inception. The BSW and MSW curricula emphasize social justice and culturally responsive practice. The MSW program follows an advanced generalist model with opportunities for clinical and macro practice.
