Position Summary

This is a full-time, 175-day (10-month annual contract) tenure-track faculty position in Allan Hancock College's Lompoc Valley Center Library. The faculty librarian will participate in program review and curriculum development; review and revise content of course(s) as necessary; participate in department and college activities; maintain twenty-five (25) required service hours per week at their primary assignment; maintain class and examination schedules as well as grade and attendance records according to college regulations; and perform related tasks as required. The assignment may include teaching in the evenings and on weekends.

The faculty librarian provides reference and information services to students and staff in person and via phone, email, online, or other current technologies; designs, prepares and teaches library orientations and research skills to students, staff, and outreach groups; promotes information literacy and ethical use of information across the campus; selects books, periodicals, and other print and non-print library materials that support the curriculum; removes obsolete or damaged materials from the collections; recommends book, audiovisual, periodical and newspaper (print and electronic) budget allocation; participates in development of guidelines and procedures for the library; teaches library research courses and maintains currency of curriculum materials for such courses; collaborates with part-time librarians on group projects; attend department meetings and LVC staff and faculty meetings; participates in college shared governance; advises the Friends of the AHC Library on library needs; promotes outreach efforts to the campus and community; consults on archival organization and maintenance for various collections; participates in program review, accreditation, assessment, and other evaluation processes, and other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions and Qualifications

Demonstrated ability to:

  1. provide information/reference services, preferably in an academic setting
  2. keep current with the developments and knowledge appropriate to librarianship
  3. participate in innovative solutions to library challenges
  4. communicate effectively (oral and written)
  5. establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others and work with minimum supervision
  6. work with and assist students having a broad range of skills, motivation, and academic vocational goals
  7. use multimedia technology in classroom instruction
  8. apply evaluation and assessment methods
  9. identify and use learning outcomes and assessment that lead to course and program improvements
Knowledge of:
  1. principles and practices of professional librarianship
  2. integrated library systems (ILS)/library services platforms (LSP)/library management system (LMS)
  3. collection development and management
  4. a wide range of information sources/formats
  5. a wide range of computer applications found in a college library environment including; learning management systems such as Canvas
Demonstrated experience in:
teaching strategies that address the needs of students with a variety of learning styles


Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in library science, or library and information science

Hiring salary range is $57,858 to $82,391 dependent upon education and experience.
