Position Summary

The Conservatory Director - Technical Theatre training, a 12-month (220 day) tenure-track assignment, will begin August 2023. The faculty member will provide instruction in technical theatre; evaluate and counsel students; plan and organize instructional materials toward course objectives; participate in program review and curriculum development; review and revise course(s) content as may be necessary; maintain five (5) required office hours per week for student consultation; participate in department and college activities; maintain class and examination schedules, as well as grade and attendance records according to college regulations; may design PCPA productions; and perform related tasks as required. 40% to 60% of the instructor's time will be for program coordination. In this capacity, the Conservatory Director will participate in the overall strategic planning and coordinate the day-to-day operation of the PCPA instructional program in Theatre (technical training program) and professional internships, including curriculum, teaching assignments, supervision of the recruitment process, tracking matriculation and coordination of part-time faculty teaching staff.

PCPA - Pacific Conservatory Theatre is a professional conservatory theatre, now in its 59th season, committed to reflecting and transforming our diverse community with the art of live theatre. As a Career and Technical Education division of Allan Hancock College, PCPA has two CTE programs for theatre technicians and actors, as well as Professional Internships, fully integrated with the Equity theatre's year-round professional productions, currently in three theatres in two cities (Santa Maria and Solvang). Essential Functions and Qualifications

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Develops the PCPA technical theatre class schedule in collaboration with Production Manager.
  2. Works with the Production Manager to coordinate the conservatory operations with the production calendar.
  3. Participates in the development and implementation of the technical theatre curriculum.
  4. Participates in technical theatre program review and revision of course(s) content as may be necessary.
  5. Conducts technical theatre faculty meetings and mentors' new technical theatre faculty.
  6. Participates in the planning, development and monitoring of the program budget.
  7. Represents PCPA at theater conferences and festivals locally, regionally and nationally.
  8. Coordinates the technical theatre training program and technical theatre internships.
  9. Coordinates all technical program and intern recruiting efforts with Casting Director/Recruitment Coordinator and participates in recruiting tour and related activities.
  10. Evaluates, mentors and counsels' students.
  11. Guides the student discipline and support process.
  12. Maintains class schedules, grade and attendance records, in accordance with college regulations.
  13. Plans and organizes instructional materials in line with course objectives.
  14. May design PCPA productions.
  15. Attends production meetings.
  16. May teach classes in technical theatre and design.
  17. May oversee conservatory students in the strike process.
  18. Promotes a commitment to anti-racism, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in all areas of PCPA.
  19. Attends required EDI, sexual harassment, anti-bias, anti-racist, and other Human Resource trainings and workshops.
  20. Performs other duties as deemed necessary by the Artistic Director/Associate Dean.
Demonstrated ability to:
  • Working knowledge of all aspects of the theater process; design, technical craft, production practices and performance.
  • Demonstrated leadership of technical or design programs.
  • Demonstrated skill as a designer with professional experience in commercial and/or regional professional theater. Experience with computer aided theatrical design technologies.
  • Demonstrated skills in organization, budgeting, management and administration within the context of educational and professional theater.
  • An educational philosophy which places the primary emphasis on student learning (versus other academic research/scholarship) in the design, delivery and evaluation of courses.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and assist students having a wide range of skills, motivation, and academic or vocational goals.
  • Demonstrated understanding of various learning styles as demonstrated in the development of course materials and assessments of student learning. Knowledge of skills to match learners, technologies, and instructional support.
  • Demonstrated commitment to integration of appropriate technologies into the learning process.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and present course materials and to develop and use resource materials.
  • Demonstrated experience successfully initiating, executing and following through on projects; including the ability to set specific objectives and measure achieved results.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Demonstrated experience evidencing commitment to anti-racism, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Evidence of sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of staff and students and to staff and students with physical, learning, and psychological disabilities.


Minimum Qualifications

Master's or Master of Fine Arts in Theatre, emphasis in Technical Theatre

Other Qualifications:
  • Any bachelor's degree and two years of professional experience; or any associate degree and six years of professional experience. The professional experience required must be directly related to the assignment; OR Master or Master of Fine Arts in drama/technical theatre/design; OR the equivalent.


Additional Information

Hiring salary range is $72,750 - $103, 577 dependent upon education and experience.
