The Staff Research Associate I/II (SRA I/II) will support the research studies of the Principal Investigator (PI), , in understanding the genetics of congenital disorders and developing new therapies to treat them. Our work involves both research in animal models and as well as patient samples, in the broad area of maternal-fetal precision medicine. Past research associates have secured positions in medical school, graduate school, and the biotech industry. Our close-knit team of scientists and clinicians provides an excellent training opportunity for motivated individuals.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The mission of the UCSF Department of Surgery is threefold: to develop the next generation of leaders in surgery; to provide outstanding quality clinical care that is cost effective, yet compassionate; and to make significant advances in scientific knowledge and clinical practice through basic and clinical research. Care of patients is what attracted our faculty and residents to surgery, and it continues to be our main focus. The Department is comprised of eleven divisions that include Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery, General Surgery, Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Transplant Surgery, and Vascular & Endovascular Surgery. Our surgeons provide care at locations throughout greater San Francisco including: UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus (Moffitt-Long Hospital), UCSF Medical Center at Mt. Zion, UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, San Francisco VA Medical Center, and Alameda County Medical Center in Oakland. Our residents also rotate through UCSF Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente, and California Pacific Medical Center. Pediatric Surgery Team consists of internationally recognized leaders providing care at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals at San Francisco and Oakland. Our pediatric general surgery team takes a compassionate, patient-centered approach to care for all who need us. Pediatric Surgery team is responsible for the management of the faculty, research and residents.

Pediatric/Fetal Surgery
The UCSF Pediatric Surgery and the Bay Area Pediatric Surgeons is the premier Pediatric Surgical Practice for the Bay Area and beyond. Our world-renowned surgeons are dedicated to the care of children, providing expert surgical care of fetuses, infants, children, and adolescents with congenital and acquired conditions.

Required Qualifications

SRA I:

  • BA/BS in a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Strong administrative skills including adeptness in keeping highlevel tasks in perspective while managing all levels of activity

SRA II:
  • In addition to the above, one or more years of recent, directly related work experience following degree completion, utilizing the techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

SRA I:

  • Prior experience in processing of tissues / biobanking
  • Lab bench skills including pipetting, tissue culture, sample processing
  • Excellent organization skills and ability perform administrative tasks
  • Microsoft Office skills
  • Interest in biology and ability to read and understand scientific concepts
  • Excellent Interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Meticulous, organized
  • Interest in working with animal models including mice

SRA II:
  • Minimum of 3 years' training and experience in a research laboratory setting; demonstrated knowledge and/or experience working with animal population
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience with and the ability to care for, work with, and handle small animals
  • Prior experience in developing working protocols and preparing IRB documents and reports
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience of purchasing making decisions, processing orders and maintaining laboratory equipment
