Senior Manager of Practice Management & Strategic Business Analysis

Cooley is seeking a Senior Manager of Practice Management & Strategic Business Analysis to join the Strategy & Legal Practice team.

Position summary: The Senior Manager of Practice Management & Strategic Business Analysis will work in partnership with the Associate Director of Practice Management, Director of Strategic Business Analysis, Director of Practice Administration, practice group leaders and department chairs to provide financial and operational support to department and practice group leadership.

This is position is expected to help develop and implement financial-based solutions aimed at improving the profitability and efficiency of practice groups, including supporting the development of strategy, business plans, financial analysis related to hiring decisions, and work closely with various professional staff teams that support to the department and practice groups. This position will also provide deep-dive, project-level support for firm management on the strategic assessment of practices in alignment with strategic goals and objectives. Specific duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Position responsibilities:

  • In conjunction with leadership, help develop and implement strategic plans for various practice group(s) and at the department level
  • Utilize existing firm financial systems to obtain data, organize the information and build reports to facilitate effective analysis
  • Monitor, evaluate and improve key performance indicators of the practice groups and departments, including cash leakage, in-depth realization studies, and utilization; maintain a partner-facing role to communicate performance through a solutions-oriented narrative
  • Facilitate long-term financial planning and growth modeling strategies for practices and departments, including aggregate annual hours, rates, revenues, headcount and client budgets
  • Analyze pipeline and demand metrics to manage capacity planning processes
  • Utilize analytical skills and expert knowledge of business, economics, finance and accounting to complete complex tasks and deliver on ad-hoc projects
  • Make recommendations to streamline workflow and process within the function, including finding ways to automate tasks and monthly reporting
  • Mentor junior team members to accurately interpret requests for analysis and reporting, act as a quality check on teamwork product
  • Support the implementation, development and use of practice management and strategic finance tools
  • Other duties, as assigned or required

Skills and experience:

Required:

  • Ability to travel, as required
  • Demonstrated success supporting senior executives
  • 7+ years in finance management to include 3+ years of management experience in relevant roles. Proven ability to operate at a more senior level in terms of scope of responsibility, judgement, and independent nature

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in business, finance, accounting, actuarial or mathematics-related field
  • Law firm, banking and/or professional services experience
  • Supervisory experience

The expected annual pay range for this position is $150,000 - $200,000. Please note that final offer amount will be dependent on geographic location, applicable experience and skillset of the candidate.
