Appointment Type: Full-Time Regular (FTR)

Location: Oak Ridge, TN

*Salary Range: $96,907 - $142,571

ELIGIBLE FOR A SIGN-ON BONUS

PURPOSE: Plan, organize, schedule, and direct the daily operations of the ORISE Beryllium Laboratory, in coordination with the Lab Director and ORISE Health Studies Senior Director, as appropriate. The laboratory is one of only three in the US performing the beryllium lymphocyte proliferation test (BeLPT); this test is a highly complex test with biological, chemical, and radiological hazards. All work must be done under strict safety and privacy guidelines to protect the confidentiality of the patient, and the safety of the employee and the environment.



Responsibilities

    Performs technical duties in the laboratory, including all parts of the BeLPT process and analysis. Including Medical Technologist 2 duties.
  • Plans, organizes, directs, and schedules work and PTO for 5-10 employees. Evaluates performance and provides mentorship through Catalytic Coaching. Oversees worker health and safety. Ensures the training of new staff.
  • Plans and organizes the daily operation of lab and all staff assignments. Responds to and troubleshoots unexpected customer and samples issues. Ensures all work is completed by end of day and/or deadlines.
  • Assures the laboratory maintains College of American Pathology, CLIA, and applicable ISO certifications. Oversees all process, equipment, and quality documentation, so that the lab is "inspection ready" at any time.
  • Reviews data flows and result output Works with IT staff to strive for optimal data processing, including sample log-in, data flow throughout the lab process, test analysis, and sending results to customer facility physicians. Oversees process of ordering, procuring, receiving, and storing of all consumables, non-consumable (services, service agreements etc..), reagents to maintain adequate stock of in date and specific lot numbers.
  • Identifies and implements appropriate new or modified methodologies for use in the laboratory, including procedures, equipment, instrumentation, and analysis of data for result determination, in coordination with the Lab Director.
  • Participates in departmental reporting, planning, and program budgeting, including making recommendations for staffing and capital expenditures.
  • Integrates established policies and procedures from support departments such as ES&H, S&S, FTD, ORAU IT and Be lab specific IT. Provides insight and feedback for lab specific issues.
  • Creates, reviews, and maintains Quality Management and Assurance polices and procedure for lab, including documentation of errors and issues followed with corrective action and process improvements.
  • Maintains positive relationship with customers by conducting tours, phone calls, and emails. Develops, presents, and makes available current and relevant educational videos, documents, newsletters, and electronic information (website) for customers.


Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or related field and 4-6 years of directly related experience. Higher level education above minimum may count for additional experience.

  • Medical Technologist (American Society for Clinical Pathology) Certification is required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Tennessee License as Medical Laboratory Supervisor-General within one year is required.
  • Work experience in a laboratory where clinical tests are performed, test results reported to a physician on a regular schedule, and patient confidentiality maintained is a prerequisite.
  • Experience in preparing a laboratory for an inspection by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) for certification, ISO and Safety audits is highly recommended.
  • The ability to discuss test results and underlying scientific basis of the BeLPT with physicians is required.
  • A background in basic computer skills is needed for running the specific programs used to calculate results to interpret the raw data for the BeLPT.
  • Must have the ability to work with a multidisciplinary team that includes laboratory technologists, safety professionals, computer support personnel, financial and budget personnel, biostatisticians, epidemiologists, and physicians.
  • Capable of managing the laboratory procedures and personnel.
  • Ability to understand and analyze each step in the process of performing beryllium lymphocyte proliferation testing. This understanding is critical when interpreting test results.
  • Must be able to differentiate between test failure/lab failure and unsatisfactory test results by looking at the raw data and reviewing lab procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of cell biology, immunology, and hematology is required.
  • Manual dexterity and some knowledge of cell culture techniques are needed to use density gradients, cell counters, and precision micropipettes.
  • Mechanical ability is required to troubleshoot some lab equipment and keep it in proper working order.
  • The use of sterile technique is necessary at all steps of the BeLPT procedure to include handling the blood sample and handling all equipment and preparing and dispensing reagents used in the test.

*The candidate's starting salary will be determined upon hire and ORAU will use salary survey data, internal comparators, and the candidate's qualifications to determine salary.
