The Opportunity

Southern New Hampshire University is looking for a part-time, temporary Gallery Assistant to update an inventory of its art collection, and to develop a proposal for the future of the collection. You will work on the University College campus located in Manchester, New Hampshire, and will require approximately 20-28 hours per week, for approximately three weeks. You will report to the dean of the School of Arts, Sciences, and Education. We are looking for a candidate with gallery or curatorial experience, knowledge of professional practices in art handling, and an interest in art history.

In this Role You'll Get To:

  • Review existing inventory and appraisal documents, and compare to physical collection
  • Update existing inventory with location information for all pieces in collection
  • Update inventory for pieces in collection not recorded in the inventory
  • Research provenance for pieces found-in-collection or on-loan from other institutions
  • Locate pieces from collection in offices and other academic spaces, and update inventory with location information
  • Develop a proposal for the future of the collection, in collaboration with the dean

What we're Looking For:

  • Detail orientation
  • Self-motivation, initiative, and ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Working knowledge of professional practices in art handling
  • Proficiency with MS Office suite

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in art history, arts administration, or museum studies (awarded or in-progress)
  • Passion for art and/or art history
  • 1+ years of experience working in an art gallery, or with an art collection
  • 1+ years of experience with inventory development in an art collection context

Working Conditions:

Work Hours: specific working hours are flexible, but are expected to occur during the work week between 8AM and 4:30 PM, and not to exceed 28 hours per week. Work should begin as soon as possible, ending on or about September 1.

Physical Requirements:

Stand and walk. Stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Climb or balance. Lift or move up to

50 pounds.
