Research Technologist
Under supervision of a faculty investigator and laboratory supervisor we are seeking a Research Technologist who will perform a variety of commercial and in-house assays in support of research and clinical protocols in a molecular diagnostics research laboratory. The position requires exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and a firm commitment to scientific methodology. The successful candidate will participate in routine specimen testing, analyze/interpret data, and undergo regular proficiency evaluations.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Assists in activities related to the day-to-day operation of the laboratory.
  • Operating automated systems and performing manual diagnostic tests related to the molecular detection of infectious diseases.
  • Receiving, processing, and storing biological specimens.
  • Analyzing data, formulating conclusions and creating appropriate statistical presentations, including graphs and charts, for the purpose of reporting research/laboratory results.
  • Working independently and as part of a team on clinical studies as well as research projects.
  • Monitoring inventory levels and proper storage of reagents and supplies in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Monitoring equipment performance and maintenance schedules; performing routine repair or replacement of standard parts.
  • Maintaining the laboratory environment to an inspection-ready level by cleaning equipment, benches, biological safety cabinets, and freezers.
  • Complying with biohazard/safety standards through proper handling of potentially hazardous chemical and biological agents in the workplace.
  • Completing annual university biohazard/universal precaution/safety training, as appropriate.
  • Creating and managing forms, databases, and reports using Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.

Starting Salary Range: Min $15.50 - Max $26.00 HRLY ($43,160 targeted; Commensurate with experience)

JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers.
