2024 - PhD Graduate - Signal Processing and Communications Engineer, Electromagnetic Systems

The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory
United States, Maryland, Laurel
11100 Johns Hopkins Road (Show on map)
Aug 10, 2024
Description

Do you want to apply advanced theoretical techniques in digital signal processing and communications to challenging U. S. Navy problems?

If you are graduating with a PhD in Applied Math, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering and would like to impact the development of the next generation of digital signal processing and communication algorithms for U. S. Navy electromagnetic systems, we'd love to have you join our team!

We are looking for an enthusiastic scientist or engineer to join us in pushing the limits of research, analysis, and modeling and simulation to develop revolutionary algorithmic packages for maritime electromagnetic systems. We are a multidisciplinary team of scientists who work with maritime-based electronic warfare (EW), radar, or other radio frequency (RF) and remote sensing systems at various stages of their lifecycle. We strive to foster an environment of great diversity, collaboration, inclusivity, and growth. As a member of our team, you will use fundamentals of digital signal processing and RF communication techniques to prototype, execute performance modeling, and produce analysis products for maritime systems with an emphasis on detection, classification, and tracking.

As a Signal Processing and Communications Engineer, you will...
  • Collaborate with team members to research, analyze, and develop creative algorithmic prototypes that address tough challenges for U.S. Navy Electromagnetic Systems.
  • Share analysis products and new ideas with your team and project sponsors, and formally present results at technical exchange and working group meetings.
  • Expand knowledge of electromagnetic systems and domain expertise.
  • Occasionally travel to support test events.

Qualifications

You meet our minimum qualifications for the job if you...

  • Have a PhD Applied Math, Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering, or a related technical area.
  • Have professional, research, or internship experience in advanced signal processing, image processing, communications engineering, RF engineering, or related topics.
  • Have Matlab experience in modeling, data analysis, and development of algorithms for complex systems.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills. Are comfortable writing and presenting about technical topics to peers, managers, and external customers.
  • Are able to obtain an Interim Secret level security clearance by your start date and can ultimately obtain a TS/SCI clearance. If selected, you will be subject to a government security clearance investigation and must meet the requirements for access to classified information. Eligibility requirements include U.S. citizenship.

You'll go above and beyond our minimum requirements if you...

  • Have experience working with EW, intelligence sensors, surveillance radars, over-the-horizon radar, or remote sensing systems (including EO, IR systems).
  • Have experience using RF test and measurement equipment and software defined radios.
  • Have relevant experience with optimal estimation algorithms, radar or communications waveforms, or AI/ML algorithm development.
  • Are familiar with detection and estimation theory, wave theory, or tracking principles.
  • Relevant internship or research experience developing algorithms or programming with Python or C/C++ in Linux environments.
  • Hold an active DoD Secret or higher clearance.
