SUMMARY
-
The Fire Instructors at the Montgomery County Fire Academy deliver fire training courses in various emergency services disciplines including fire suppression, technical rescue, driver/operator, officer/instructor development, and hazardous materials. In addition, instructors may be utilized to teach specialized courses in subject matters such as emergency management, first aid/CPR, EVOC, PA Fish and Boat Water Rescue, instructional techniques, and fire service administration.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Provide high caliber instruction in designated emergency services courses and disciplines both in a classroom and hands-on training environment;
- Operate classroom audiovisual equipment and computer software as needed to support training programs;
- Evaluate student learning through direct observation, cognitive (written), and psychomotor (hands-on) exams;
- Utilize discipline specific equipment to support student learning objectives and restore equipment to service at the conclusion of training programs
- Provide feedback to training coordinators on training program improvement needs, topics, skills, lesson plans, and curriculum

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

- High school diploma or GED;
- Minimum 21 years of age;
- Professional certification as a NFPA 1001 Firefighter II and NFPA 1041 Fire & Emergency Services Instructor I;
- Certification to instruct specialty courses may be substituted in lieu of the above fire service certifications;
- A minimum of five (5) years' experience in fire or emergency services
- Currently certified in CPR and first aid and maintain certification for duration of employment;
- PA State Fire Academy Suppression, Non-Suppression, Certification Evaluator or PA Fish and Boat Commission Water Rescue Instructor (preferred);
- Possess or have the ability to complete an adult learning and educational methodology course within one (1) year of hire, or possess five (5) years' documented teaching experience, or possess a teaching degree/certification;
- Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills;
- Able to work various weekday evenings, and weekends;
- Must have or be able to obtain current FBI criminal background check, PA Child Abuse check and PA State Police clearance for employment prior to hire (volunteer-level clearances are not acceptable).

The employee is regularly required to do moderate and occasionally heavy physical work including reaching, pulling, climbing a ladder or structure, bending, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Ability to wear job-specific personal protective equipment including the potential use of self-contained breathing apparatus, and structural firefighting turn out gear in accordance with manufacturer specifications and applicable codes and standards. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and depth perception. WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate with some periods of elevated noise that may require the use of hearing protection. The employee typically works in a classroom environment with periods of outdoor activity in all weather conditions. Work may occasionally take place in a live fire training facility with potential immediately dangerous to life and health (IDLH) atmospheric conditions and high heat levels.
