Description The Civil Group at Leidos currently has an opening for a Scientist (intern) to work within the Integrated Mission Operation in the Climate, Energy, and Environment "Climate Solutions" team. This position is a limited-term internship suitable for a science, technology, or engineering graduate student or late-stage student currently enrolled in a postgraduate program of study. This position involves working closely with the members of the Climate Solutions team and personnel from the wider Leidos organization, providing developmental and upskilling opportunities, and operational experience of a high-performance science business environment. The Climate Solutions team and Scientist will shape a package of responsibilities that aligns with the Scientist's postgraduate studies from across our portfolio of on-contract, research and development, business development, and communications work. For this position, candidates interested in supporting at least one of the following are strongly preferred: the production of datasets for an energy vulnerability study in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands; the study of "Earth at Night" nighttime lights data (NASA VIIRS) for indicators of socioeconomic change; improving the availability, accessibility, and actionability of climate data; and improving data storage, management, stewardship, and delivery through online archives including cloud. Primary Responsibilities The Scientist will work on assignments that are technical in nature to support the production of datasets, data processing and analysis, and data visualization and communication, primarily for geospatial and remote sensing data from online data archives and databases. Responsibilities will include finding relevant datasets and information; evaluating and quality-checking of datasets; forming dataset descriptions and specifications; and making inquiries about data availability. There may be opportunities to be involved in scientific research, collaboration, presentation, peer-reviewed publications, and other forms of scientific communication. There may be opportunities to be involved in coding, software development, cloud computing and design, database engineering, and Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AI/ML) analyses.
