Career Opportunity:

The city of Las Vegas invites applicants for Sr. Plumber. This position leads, oversees and participates in the more complex and difficult work of staff responsible for performing a variety of difficult and skilled plumbing tasks; repairs and maintains public buildings and facilities; and performs a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This is the advanced journey level class in the Plumber series. Positions at this level are distinguished from other class within the series by the level of responsibility assumed, the complexity of duties assigned, and the independence with which the employee is expected to perform. Employees perform the most difficult and responsible types of duties assigned to classes within this series. Employees at this level are required to be fully trained in all procedures related to assigned area of responsibility.

Supervision Received and Exercised

Receives direction from higher-level staff.

Acts as a lead worker, exercising functional or technical supervision, including scheduling and assigning tasks, providing guidance, ensuring work is completed according to proper procedure, monitoring work progress, and reviewing results.

EXAMINATION PROCESS:
A civil service examination will be conducted in accordance with the Civil Service Rules of the city of Las Vegas. The civil service examination for this recruitment is a
written exam weighted 100% for placement on the eligible list.

ELIGIBLE LIST: You must score 70% or higher on the written examination to be placed on the eligible list.

SELECTION PROCESS: Final candidate selection will include list placement and may include a hiring interview (if applicable). Any individual offered employment will be required to pass a pre-employment drug test, complete background check, and may be required to demonstrate the ability to perform the physical requirements of the job."
Some positions may require preliminary background checks.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES

Essential Functions:

  1. Leads, plans, trains and reviews the work of staff responsible for the repair and maintenance of plumbing fixtures in city buildings.
  2. Plans, directs and participates in the more difficult and skilled plumbing tasks.
  3. Supervises the use of and operates a variety of hand and power tools.
  4. Trains assigned employees in plumbing methods and techniques and in the set up and use of equipment.
  5. Verifies the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods and techniques, compliance with applicable standards and specifications, and safe work practices and procedures.
  6. Oversees and participates in the installation, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of a variety of city plumbing and irrigation systems and equipment, including flush valves, water and sewer lines, piping, hoses, fittings, adapters, couplings, broken valves and wood components; repairs leaks in faucets, drains, pumps, hot water tanks, piping and valves.
  7. Assists in the repair and maintenance of the plumbing portions of HVAC systems.
  8. Removes all plumbing and plumbing fixtures; installs new plumbing and plumbing fixtures as needed.
  9. Installs and maintains backflow prevention devices; maintains fertilizer injection systems.
  10. Assists in planning new plumbing systems; estimates time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisitions materials as required; maintains files and receipts.
  11. Provides technical guidance to contractors and other city maintenance staff; reviews blue prints; performs inspections to make recommendations on repairs or upgrades.
  12. Writes reports and make recommendations.

Marginal Functions:

  1. Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  2. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.
  3. Performs minor non-structural welding fabrication and installation projects.
  4. Responds to emergencies during evening and weekends.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Experience:

Four years of increasingly responsible journey-level plumbing experience.

Training:

Equivalent to graduation from high school, including additional specialized training in plumbing.

License or Certificate:

Possession of an appropriate valid driver's license on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.

Possession of a journeyman plumber card issued by the Nevada Board of Plumbing Examiners on the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.

Possession of Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester certification through the California-Nevada Section of the American Water Works Association within twelve (12) months of the date of application, and maintenance thereafter.

Within 15 days of initial hire, provide documentation of completion of an OSHA10 course in construction industry safety and health hazard recognition and prevention, developed by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration of the U.S. Department of Labor.

Possession of an appropriate City of Las Vegas aerial lift certificate within six months of the date of appointment, and maintenance thereafter.

Possession of a City of Las Vegas fork lift certificate within six months of the date of appointment, and maintenance thereafter.
