Job Summary

We are seeking a laboratory technician/research associate, who will work with the Southworth lab and collaborate with other laboratories in the IND. The person in this position will support the research efforts focused on the characterization of neurodegenerative disease-associated tau fibrils. This individual will be engaged in direct research efforts, through recombinant protein expression and purification, electron microscopy, fluorescence screening assays and tau amyloid fibrillization assays. The successful candidate should have knowledge or experience in the skills related to this research emphasis including protein expression in e. coli, protein purification, and protein fibrilization or aggregation using thioflavin T fluorescence. In addition, he/she must be highly motivated and have excellent communication and organizational skills. Prior experience with protein purification methods, negative stain electron microscopy and protein fibrilization assays is required.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (IND) at UCSF is pursuing a cutting-edge blend of basic science and clinical medicine to provide outstanding care to those suffering from neurodegenerative diseases. Founded in 1999, the IND is committed to creating therapeutics that will halt diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and dementia resulting from traumatic brain injuries. The IND is poised to make serious contributions to this struggle at the frontier of neuroscience and medicine. The mission of the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases is to discover causes and develop cures for these illnesses with an innovative program of basic research and clinical medicine. The IND is directed by Nobel Laureate Stanley B. Prusiner, MD.

Required Qualifications


  • BA/BS in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or a related science and knowledge of, or experience with, the basic techniques or methods required by the position; and/or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • One or more years of recent, directly related work experience
  • Knowledge or experience in a research laboratory, including developing and maintaining biological and chemical safety protocols.
  • Experience in protein expression using e. coli and protein purification procedures
  • Experinece negative stain electron microsopy
  • Experience in vitro protein fibrillization or aggregation assays
  • Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures in protein biochemistry.
  • Computer literacy on both Macintosh and PC, MS-Office suite and basic statistical analysis.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience in high throughput differential scanning fluorimetry (HT-DSF).
  • Experience in implementing Laboratory Safety Guidelines and Procedures.
