Job Summary

The Critical Care Physician Assistant is a licensed physician assistant who possesses the advanced education, knowledge, clinical skills and experience necessary to provide expert advanced practice in critical care. The primary responsibility of the Critical Care Physician Assistant (CCPA) is providing and directing care for patients in the adult ICUs at the UCSF Medical Center. The CCPA is responsible for maintaining quality of care standards for all procedures and clinical care provided in the ICUs. The CCPA provides self-direction and accountability in the development of this role within the medical center.

The CCPA shall provide medical care under the supervision of the Physician Director of Adult Critical Care Medicine and their individual collaborating physicians. The CCPA shall provide care in accordance with standardized procedures. The CCPA shall be proficient in the areas of arterial catheter insertion, central venous catheter insertion, ventilator management, sedation, and pain control. The Medical Staff Office on a biannual basis grants privileges to practice at UCSF Medical Center.

The CCPA may rotate through all of the focused care ICUs at the medical center including: cardiothoracic, neurologic, neurosurgical, medical, general surgical, and transplant. The CCPA shall work collaboratively with physician students, residents, fellows, and attending physicians. The CCPA will participate in the precepting of APP students and post graduate fellows. This position is scheduled for 12 hour rotating shifts from days to nights including holidays and weekends.

Please note: The compensation ranges listed online for roles not covered by a bargaining unit agreement are very wide, however a job offer will typically fall in the range of 80% - 120% of the established mid-point. An offer will take into consideration the experience of the final candidate AND the current salary level of individuals working at UCSF in a similar role.

For roles covered by a bargaining unit agreement, there will be specific rules about where a new hire would be placed on the range.

Department Description

The Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (CC APP) team at UCSF provides expert care in the adult intensive care units at UCSF Health. The CC APPs are an element of the interdisciplinary critical care team that includes attending physicians, physicians in training, pharmacists, registered nurses, rehabilitation therapists, and UCSF students. The CC APPs provide care in all of the adult intensive care units including Cardiac, Neurologic, Medical, and Surgical intensive care units. These units provide care for patients undergoing cardiac surgery, organ transplantation, thoracic surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgical surgery, general surgery, or patients requiring complex medical management.

Required Qualifications


  • Completion of clinical rotations in Adult Critical Care during Physician Assistant training (if new graduate) or recent experience working in Adult Critical Care patient care as a Physician Assistant
  • Certified as a Physician's Assistant by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations
  • Demonstrated excellence in the following areas: clinical practice, communication, clinical case management, leadership/problem identification/resolution, and teaching

Preferred Qualifications


  • Completion of an accredited critical care practice transition program.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of recent experience working in Adult Critical Care patient care as a Physician Assistant
  • Minimum of two (2) years of recent experience as an inpatient Physician Assistant in an academic medical center
  • Experience with quality improvement and/or research
  • Author of publication in peer reviewed journal
  • Experience as faculty or instructor in graduate advanced practice provider program

License/Certification


  • Must hold an active and current California Physician Assistant License (PA)
  • California driver's license (CDL) if required for position
  • Must hold current national board certification by first day of work and maintain
  • Must hold an active and transferable DEA license to California and have evidence of transfer by 90th day of clinical practice. (It is the responsibility of the employee to transfer their DEA license to their new place of employment if from out of state, via online DEA portal and provide evidence of transfer)
  • Must have completed an AAPA recognized graduate master's degree program as a physician assistant.
  • Must have submitted enrollment with CMS Medicare and Medicaid through the credentialing process by first clinical day
  • Current AHA CPR certification
  • Must hold current AHA BLS as minimum requirement
  • Must hold current AHA ACLS as minimum requirement
  • Neurocritical Care Society Emergency Neurological Life Support (ENLS) certification upon hire


UCSF Health requires all Advanced Health Practitioners (APP) to be credentialed through OMAG to practice and be privileged through CIDP to function in their clinical role. This applies to both adult and pediatric APPs in the inpatient and outpatient clinical settings at all UCSF Health sites and affiliates. Credentialing, health plan enrollment, and approval of privileges must be completed prior to the first working day. Inability to comply with the requirements of OMAG/CIDP AT ALL TIMES will result in either, a LOA or suspension of privileges designation.
