About the College/Unit/Department |
The University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine, founded in 1946, is dedicated to training future veterinarians, providing services to animal owners and veterinarians, and conducting investigations to improve the health of animals as well as people. The college benefits pets and their owners, food-producing animals, and wildlife by offering the highest quality hospital and diagnostic laboratory services. Equipped with the most technologically advanced facilities located on a university campus, the college is dedicated to safeguarding public health by studying emerging infectious diseases that affect both animal and human health.
The Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery consists of 50 faculty members, 50 clinical residents, 10 rotating interns,8 specialty interns, and 3 administrative staff members. Shared laboratory space and technical support are provided within the department, and there are 7 dedicated research technicians who assist in the research missions of the department's faculty. Other specialties within the department include anesthesia, dermatology, internal medicine, nutrition, medical and radiation oncology, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, radiology, soft tissue surgery, and zoological medicine, as well as a community practice program (
UGA Pet Health Center). The Department participates in the college-wide M.S. and Ph.D. programs. Members of the department also actively participate in highly successful collaborative efforts with faculty members from other departments within the college and other colleges on campus, including the College of Public Health, College of Engineering, and the Athens campus of the Medical College of Georgia. The department has a strong track record for teaching, research, and clinical service.
The University of Georgia is located in Athens, Georgia, and is approximately a one-hour drive going northeast from Atlanta. The campus is the nation's first chartered state-supported university and home of excellent academic programs, the Peabody Awards, and nationally recognized athletic teams. Athens is centered among beautiful surrounding counties with quaint towns, rural landscapes, and rich history.
