Summary:
The litigation paralegal proficiently and effectively assists attorneys in all facets of the life cycle of general litigation and appellate matters. To be successful in this role, they will be a highly motivated, organized individual with superior analytical ability, judgment, and research skills, as well as the desire to provide exceptional client service. The litigation paralegal must be a self-starter with proven efficacy as a problem solver, excellent interpersonal skills, and the highest degree of professionalism. Must be a team player with a positive, can-do attitude. Outstanding technology literacy and advanced e-Discovery skills are required.

Duties and Responsibilities:


  • Directing staff in the organization and management of data and evidence
  • Communicating with appellate manager on appellate-related team deadlines
  • Working closely with the eDiscovery department
  • Drafting correspondence, pleadings, and discovery, basic appellate documents, including designations of transcripts, docketing statements, status reports, and stipulations
  • Investigating, locating, analyzing, summarizing, and tracking facts, evidence, and other data using online resources, such as Pacer state court dockets, search engines, social media, Westlaw, medical databases, Edgar, etc.
  • Facilitating records requests, including medical, FOIA, DMV, courts, etc.
  • Preparing pre-suit damages analysis
  • Locating and interviewing witnesses and working with investigator(s) as needed
  • Working with expert witnesses, including researching potential experts, preparation of documents for review, and coordination of filing and/or service of expert reports and attendance of expert(s) at events
  • Researching, analyzing, and summarizing rules of procedure, evidence, statutes, regulations, and case law
  • Drafting privilege and redaction logs
  • Facilitating IMEs
  • Preparing appendices and excerpts of record (identifying requisite components under the Nevada Rules of Appellate Procedure and Ninth Circuit Rules)
  • Appropriate utilization of e-Discovery platforms, such as Everlaw, Eclipse, CasePoint, Relativity, Viewpoint, etc. to manage evidence in conjunction with our Litigation Support Team
  • Appropriate utilization of other legal technologies, such as CaseMap, TimeMap, TextMap, Trial Director, OnCue, and PageVault
  • Facilitating court filings (completing filings when necessary)
  • Instructing docketing staff on recording deadlines, verifying accuracy of deadlines, tracking deadlines, and ensuring deadlines are met
  • Summarizing depositions, other witness statements, and evidence
  • Preparing medical and/or case chronologies
  • Preparing for and attending arbitration, hearings, mediation, and trials
  • Educate, train, and advise case teams and clients on electronic data management, database hygiene, and trial support.
  • Selection and coordination with litigation and trial vendors
  • Hot seat support and courtroom management
  • Accurately tracking and recording time spent on tasks and projects
  • Some duties may require in-office presence.


Education and Experience:


  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and remain flexible to meet client and attorney needs while maintaining a positive attitude and composure
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing internally with attorneys and staff and externally with clients, opposing counsel, co-counsel, expert witnesses, courts, government agencies, etc.
  • Good understanding of legal terminology, including technology and e-Discovery terms
  • Legal writing talent
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of litigation workflows and processes
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule as needed, including nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Outstanding technology aptitude and literacy, including but not limited to the complete Microsoft Office Suite; PDF compilation programs; file management systems (FileSite/WorkSite); time tracking software, e-Discovery platforms, case management programs, and web capture software
  • Understanding of various e-filing processes and requirements
  • Ability to prioritize and maintain pace with voluminous communications and tasks
  • Familiarity with rules of procedure or the ability to quickly research and understand such rules
  • Ability to record time in a manner that reflects the value of work invested in tasks or projects
  • Ability to understand and follow specific, detailed instructions while recognizing when to ask for clarification or make suggestions
  • A minimum of five years of progressively more complex civil litigation experience required, including experience with appellate matters
  • Bachelor's or Associate's degree in paralegal or legal studies from a regionally accredited college or university preferred
  • Experience working across offices at a distance desired
