We are seeking a talented Director of Professional Development to manage our firm-wide lawyer professional development program. Working in close partnership with Practice Group Leaders, Committees, and other firm leaders, this position is accountable for managing the career progression of lawyers, managing compliance with multi-state professional standards, and implementing training, performance reviews, and professional development programs that support the retention, advancement, and success of our talented lawyers and other timekeepers. The successful candidate will have experience with designing and implementing lawyer core competency programs, mentoring programs, coaching, performance management and training curriculum. Technical proficiency with Microsoft Office (especially Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and at least one learning management system and one performance management tool are highly desired.

The Opportunity

The Director of Professional Development oversees and designs lawyer on-boarding, core legal and professional training workshops, leadership development, as well as initiatives around engagement and retention. The Director also plays an integral role in our diversity and inclusion efforts by working closely with the Chief Talent Officer and the DE&I Committee to help manage and facilitate related initiatives and programs. This role works with firm leaders and practice group leaders on individual growth plans and partners to design and implement programs addressing the identified needs. The Director also works on special projects and initiatives with various groups and teams throughout the firm.

The position is a hybrid position based in Denver, CO, reporting to the Chief Talent Officer. The ideal candidate should be prepared to travel once a month on average, or more, to build and sustain strong relationships with attorneys and firm leaders based outside our Denver office.

How You Will Spend Your Time


  • Serve as trusted point of contact to address lawyer questions or concerns, including the facilitation of identifying appropriate team or department for resolution;
  • Deliver and expand new lawyer onboarding programs; evaluate existing procedures for orientation and integration of newly hired lawyers and recommend areas to enhance and focus the experience;
  • Develop meaningful and efficient integration programs and tools for both newer and lateral lawyers;
  • Work collaboratively with the Associate Compensation and Review Committee to administer the associate annual performance review and compensation-setting processes;
  • Coordinate the patent agent and income partner performance review processes;
  • Collaborate to support income partners with progress toward professional development goals and to respond to performance feedback throughout the year;
  • Engage regularly with lawyers and patent agents to gain an in-depth understanding of their professional aspirations, experiences, strengths, development needs, and relevant personal circumstances to support their short and long-term professional development goals;
  • Work closely with the Income Partner Development Committee to develop income partners and prepare them for promotion;
  • Work closely with Practice group Leaders, Committees, and partners on the strategic planning and development of the firm's training, mentoring, and leadership development programs for lawyers;
  • Identify internal and external training resources, oversee and contribute to the development of training materials and presentations;
  • Train and motivate partners and senior associates to create and deliver effective training, feedback and mentoring of more junior associates;
  • As a member of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusiveness Committee, identify and implement important initiatives and firm wide training;
  • Prepare and analyze a variety of reports and data for committees, practice group leaders, and firm leadership;
  • Propose and manage the professional development budget; analyze internal and external trends to identify future needs and ensure the budget is used with impact and alignment with firm priorities;
  • Keep abreast of trends and best practices for adult learning, legal training and lawyer professional development; make strategic and tactical recommendations;
  • Support the Annual Trial Academy Program, Ascend Program for high performers and other initiatives as needed;
  • Complete and report on data analysis pertaining to billable hour and other performance metrics, Mansfield certification, retention and/or attrition data, partner candidate metrics; and
  • Lead Professional Development team in the delivery of the above.
  • Some duties require in-office presence.


What You Need for Success


  • Bachelor's degree required but a JD or Master's degree in a related field such as organizational development, organizational psychology, leadership development or human resources is preferred.
  • At least five years of professional level experience in many of the following areas: learning & development, employee relations, mentoring, diversity & inclusion, people analytics, performance management, leadership and executive development.
  • Demonstrated experience designing or implementing training curricula, preferably in a law firm or other professional services environment.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Excel and PPT; proficiency with LMS and performance management software is also necessary, CE Manager and/or ViDesktop is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the best practices and trends in employee engagement, retention, training, and development.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, presentation skills and organizational skills with experience adjusting for different audiences, personalities, and methods of communication.
  • Previous success managing multiple priorities simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven, detail-oriented work environment.
  • Experience building the relationships and credibility required to coach and counsel others at all levels, provide feedback, influence the behavior of others, and support the achievement of goals.
  • Professional presence, strong interpersonal, management and innovative problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to be a change agent, drive new firm initiatives, and motivate others to action, with or without formal authority.
  • Demonstrates strategic focus combined with the ability to be hands-on in the execution of operational responsibilities.
  • Ability to define goals, develop project plans and follow though to achieve results.
  • Sound judgment, able to establish a high level of credibility across the firm, and act as a trusted advisor.
  • Flexible mindset with ability to learn and adopt new technologies, concepts, and practices quickly.

Pay range: $150,000 - $190,000.

Compensation can vary based on qualifications and experience.
