DESCRIPTION

Experienced leader for a large, diverse, complex non-credited recreational or activities program. Assists in the design, creation, implementation and instruction of recreational programs for participants of all ages and may serve as a lead or mentor for other program instructors. Required to demonstrate considerable discretion, initiative and independence to resolve issues and perform other duties as assigned.

The Recreation Classes and Youth Programs Assistant Director will be responsible for the coordination and management of assigned instructional classes and youth camp programs including Knock Around Camp, and various youth and adult Recreation Class programs including gymnastics and circus arts. Responsible for the maintenance and design of program(s), policy development and implementation, paperwork administration, staff scheduling, employee hiring, training, supervision and evaluation. Coordinate and administer all the program's schedules for facility usage and with other department and university activities. Maintain curriculum to address youth and instructional program topics with a focus on sustainability of clients and programming. Works with the Marketing Director to make contributions as it relates to communication strategies.

The Recreation Classes and Youth Programs Assistant Director makes and provides programmatic and budgetary recommendations. Responsible for the administration of program budgets and inventory management and controls of equipment and other department resources. Works with the Knock Around Camp Director to coordinate the oversight of all risk management components for the Knock Around Summer Camp program. Recommends revisions to and implements risk management program and program-area specific policies and procedures, ensuring safe operation and security of the program.

The Assistant Director of Recreation Classes and Youth Programs provides work direction and supervision for contract staff, student employees, and staff volunteers. Participates in hiring and is responsible for training and development of program area students, Knock Around counselors, gymnastics and circus arts instructors. Provides assistance at other Recreation Department special events and activities and makes presentations to groups on campus to promote the Recreation Department and the Knock Around Camp program, as needed.

This position provides daily supervision of 10 students and 14+ BYA instructors.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Client service focused, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking skills to resolve non-standard issues.

  • Highly effective verbal and written communication skills in the English language.

  • Strong proficiency in the use of basic computer applications relevant to job duties. Knowledge of Mac and PC computers, and the ability to use various software (Excel, Power Point, Microsoft Word and Microsoft Outlook preferred).

  • Thorough knowledge of program activity and industry best practices. Substantive experience in curriculum development for children's instructional and recreation instructional programs, including leadership development, community building, group dynamics, goal setting and action planning.

  • Skills to develop original ideas, creative problem-solving skills in a varied and challenging environment including service orientation, program management, sound judgment and decision-making, and critical thinking skills.

  • Strong leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization.

  • Ability to work in youth camps, fitness and outdoor programs. Exceptional ability to quickly and safely assess participants' skills and knowledge base, and to challenge them accordingly. Demonstrated knowledge and background to evaluate situations for potential problems, and ability to act quickly, decisively and with good judgment in difficult, unusual or emergency situations.

  • Ability to effectively select, hire, delegate, train, supervise, motivate and evaluate non-career and volunteer personnel of all levels. Ability to invite information, constructive criticism and collaboration from others.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse workload, establishing and meeting goals and work schedule deadlines, and independently following tasks through to completion.

  • Knowledge of Gymnastics and/or Aerials recreation instructional class programs, including teaching standards and industry best practices. Ability to assess equipment safety and determine maintenance/purchasing needs.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Ability to successfully pass FBI and DOJ Criminal Check.

  • Must have flexible schedule and be available to work evenings, weekends and holidays, to attend or deliver on- and off-campus programs and events.

  • Mandated Reporter: This position has been identified as a Mandated Reporter pursuant to the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and requires immediate reporting of physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of anyone under the age of 18. It is the responsibility of the Mandated Reporter to ensure that they obtain proper training in order to fulfill their reporting responsibilities as required by the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and University policy and to complete and submit the required reports to the UC San Diego Police Department without delay.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $52,100 - $87,900 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $24.95 - $42.10

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
