Moffatt & Nichol's Baton Rouge, LA office is seeking a Structural Engineer with at least 3 years of experience. The successful new hire will focus on waterfront/marine structural projects. This position provides you with an opportunity to grow within the engineering profession by participating in the design of large-scale, highly complex waterfront structural engineering projects at the fastest growing container port in the United States! Work will be completed under the guidance of a talented team of waterfront structural engineers and designers. The successful candidate will have well-developed technical skills and a team-oriented attitude.

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Participate in the conceptual development and design of waterfront structural projects in the piers, docks, container shipping, defense, bulk material handling, and oil and gas industries.
  • Perform structural analysis, design, and detailing of concrete, steel, and timber structures.
  • Analyze static and dynamic loading on laterally performing structures including the impact of soil-structure interaction and designing foundations for waterfront structures.
  • Develop finite element models of marine structures using SAP2000 and Xtract to simulate the behavior of complex waterfront structures under various loading conditions and optimize their design for structural efficiency and performance.
  • Prepare calculations and document design information for completed designs.
  • Coordinate structural detail development with engineers and drafting technicians.
  • Perform site inspections and condition assessments of existing structures.
  • Providing technical support during the construction phase of waterfront projects, including reviewing submittals, shop drawings, responding to requests for information (RFIs), and conducting site visits to ensure compliance with design specifications and standards.
  • Experience in AutoCAD and assist in preparing design drawings.
  • Applying principles of coastal engineering to address erosion, sedimentation, and other coastal processes affecting waterfront structures, and implementing measures to mitigate their impacts.
  • Maintaining accurate documentation and records of waterfront engineering projects, including design calculations, construction drawings, and inspection reports, and correspondence with contractors.
  • Collaborating with project teams to identify cost-effective design alternatives and value engineering solutions that optimize the performance, durability, and constructability of waterfront structures while minimizing lifecycle costs.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with Structural emphasis required. Master of Science in Civil Engineering with Structural emphasis preferred.
  • At least 3 years or more of experience. Previous experience or internship/cooperative education in heavy civil, structural, or marine/waterfront design is a must.
  • A Professional Engineering License is required or potential to obtain within 1 year of hiring.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or comparable drafting platform is required.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis software such as SAP2000 or comparable equivalent is required.
  • Possession of or eligibility to obtain a Transportation Workers Identification Credential (TWIC)
  • All new hires will be required to successfully complete and pass a pre-employment (post offer) background check in compliance with NIST 800-171

Physical requirements:

Work is generally performed in an office or client office setting. Ability to use standard office equipment is required. Travel will be required.
