Essential Functions Job Summary The Institute of Texan Cultures at UTSA seeks an energetic and creative head curator as we embark on our path to becoming a museum of the future that celebrates the rich stories of Texas - past, present, and future. The Head Curator will play an integral role in implementing the new vision for the ITC resulting from the ITC Centennial 2068 visioning process. Provides creative leadership and implements the exhibition schedule for the ITC; supervises the ITC exhibits, visitor services, and education teams and works collaboratively across departments within Libraries and Museums to deliver a holistic visitor-centered experience; and will develop long-range planning of the exhibitions, manages schedule and contracts, and directs curatorial staff with collaborative oversight of community engagement programming. Core Responsibilities Provides effective leadership and management of the exhibitions and community experience, assists the Museum in delivering its mission, and achieving strategic goals. Develops and implements installations and exhibitions that promote knowledge of Texan Cultures through the UTSA/ITC collections and strategic loans from neighboring institutions/community partners. Provides leadership and responsibility for the planning, research, and delivery of an integrated exhibition and educational portfolio. Working directly with faculty, artists, and community experts, the head curator has primary responsibility for researching, writing, and developing exhibitions and related materials such as didactics, labels, gallery guides, audio tours, and catalogs that communicate and engage across a variety of audiences. Develops a plan for multimedia as part of a cohesive exhibit plan, including exhibit interactives, website, and other digital elements. Oversees exhibition design and gallery management with strict adherence to timelines and budgets. Provides installation oversight of departmental, cross-departmental, and volunteer work groups. Collaborates with the Curator of Education to provide guidance and oversight in the development of interpretation plans and interactive educational activities accompanying all exhibitions underpinned by solid educational goals and objectives that serve a broad audience and learning styles. Performs other duties as assigned. Required Qualifications Master's of Arts in History, Public History, American Studies, Museum Studies, Folklore, Ethnic Studies, Anthropology, or related field. Minimum five (5) years of experience working in a museum setting in curation, exhibit design, or interpretation. Strong project management, supervisory, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills. Proven experience curating, delivering exhibitions, and writing publications. Attention to detail and accuracy in interpretive media and presentations. Excellent oral and written communication skills, public presentation and teaching skills, and ability to deliver content to various audiences. Proven experience and knowledge of best practices in museum education and participatory interpretation practices. Effective collaborator within the museum/university and with community partners and stakeholders. Preferred Qualifications Ph.D. in fields above preferred. Experience managing a team in a museum setting preferred. Demonstrated focus on Texas history. Additional Information UTSA is a tobacco free campus. This is a security sensitive position. Working Conditions General office conditions. Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions, or other business-related events across multiple sites. After-hours and weekend work may be required. Physical Demands: Sedentary work primarily. Occasional need to perform some physical activity during installation and deinstallation of exhibits which may require lifting or bending. Exerts up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally. This position will be primarily located on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
