Staff Engineer

3Play Media
remote work
United States, Massachusetts, Boston
77 North Washington Street (Show on map)
Jul 20, 2024

3Play Media is a rapidly growing, profitable technology company revolutionizing how people consume online media. Our premium live captioning, transcription, audio description, and translation solutions serve over 10,000 higher ed, enterprise, media, and government customers. Established in 2007 at MIT Sloan, we've since expanded with headquarters in Boston, MA, and offices in Minneapolis, MN, and Calgary, AB.

We are seeking a staff software engineer with extensive experience in backend systems to join our Recorded Engineering team. In this role, you will be instrumental in driving the growth of 3Play's primary revenue lines. The team builds and maintains the marketplace between customers and our vast contractor base, ensuring that our users can integrate with their preferred media hosting site (think Youtube, Vimeo, AWS S3 and more). We also collaborate with internal teams across the organization to understand the needs and desires of our end users, allowing us to prioritize the most impactful changes.

You are a great fit for this role if you are an experienced engineer who enjoys collaborating across departments and functions. You enjoy stepping into a product mindset, understanding the "why" behind the "what" we build, and collaborating with our team's Product Manager. You create experiences with the user in mind and have a critical eye for design. You are also someone with a passion for creating and implementing cross-functional technical patterns that will enhance and expand our engineering capabilities.

Requirements

Candidates who meet most but not all requirements for this position are encouraged to apply.

  • 6+ years of experience in backend web development, preferably Ruby on Rails
  • 6+ years of experience with relational databases
  • 3+ years of experience with cloud infrastructure providers, preferably AWS
  • Experience designing and integrating with APIs and knowledge of RESTful practices
  • Ability to investigate requirements, often taking on a product owner role to ensure alignment between technical solutions and business needs
  • Experience designing and building developer tooling and driving its adoption
  • Expertise in system monitoring and performance optimization.
  • Passion for automated testing

Bonus qualifications

  • Experience with non-relational databases, such as Mongo
  • Experience with front-end tooling, such as React and Remix
  • Experience working with containerization and orchestration tools, such as Docker and Kubernetes
  • Experience with video and media transcoding

Join our team and enjoy a flexible work environment! While we value the flexibility of remote work, we also believe in the power of in-person collaboration. Please note that attendance in the Boston office is expected every Wednesday. For all other days of the week, you have the flexibility to work where you will be most effective.
