Job Summary

Under the direction of the Lead Safety Coordinator, as part of the Food Chain Safety Team, assist in maintenance of comprehensive safety programs for chemical laboratories, oces, on-campus animal facilities, and on-campus human clinical research facilities. Facilitate compliance with all applicable federal, state and county legal requirements and University policies. Act as liaison between Safety Services/Environmental Health & Safety, and Department of Nutrition personnel (i.e., faculty, staff, students, post-docs, visitors).

Under supervision of the Teaching Coordinator, assist with daily management, set-up, clean-up, and maintenance of teaching laboratories in support of Department of Animal Science curriculum. Provide animal care, supplies for laboratory use, and assure availability of required materials, reagents, and supplies. Assist in various general business operations related to teaching, including procuring supplies and maintaining inventories manage the common space and equipment for Meyer Hall Common Space.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience with and/or understanding of safety in the science setting.
  • Experience handling large agricultural animals.
  • Skills working with research laboratory equipment
  • Basic knowledge of general chemistry and routine chemical laboratory procedures. Skills to use laboratory equipment, such as pipettors, centrifuges, electronic balances, microscopes, and pH meters.
  • Strong organizational skills to manage the common space classroom scheduling for 3 academic departments with heavy teaching loads. Excellent organizational skills; ability to independently oversee a variety of tasks.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to effectively communicate and interact with supervisor, faculty, staff, and students.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Insert Here Bachelor's degree in an animal science or other relevant science-based major.
  • Experience handling small laboratory animals.
  • Knowledge of university, state and federal laboratory and animal safety regulations and requirements.
  • Knowledge of animal science or related field.
  • Skills in mathematics and chemistry to perform calculations and prepare reagents, molar solutions, and dilutions.
  • Ability to follow and enforce University policies and procedures regarding animal care and use and laboratory safety.

Physical Demands

  • Occasionally lift and push/pull objects including lab and industrial equipment weighing up to 50lbs.
  • Ability to clean livestock pens and maneuver around livestock.
  • Ability to work with and in areas with animal carcasses and tissue.
  • Ability to sit and use computer for extended periods of time.
